Job Description

The primary role of a Phlebotomist is to assist in performing various duties, troubleshooting issues, providing training, and making workflow recommendations. This position involves experience in blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, decontamination, and updating patient information.


Responsibilities

  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
  • Explain the venipuncture process clearly and courteously to patients.
  • Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
  • Ensure accuracy by checking test requisitions or computer labels against scripts.
  • Package specimens for transport and ensure proper storage conditions.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department trainings.
  • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Essential Skills

  • Proficiency in venipuncture and phlebotomy.
  • At least 1 year of recent phlebotomy experience in a hospital setting with all age groups, from pediatric to geriatric.
  • Experience with 30+ patient draws per day in a fast-paced environment.
  • Phlebotomy certification.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Customer service experience.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must have hospital experience or experience in a fast-paced lab.

Work Environment

The role is based in the Phlebotomy/Lab department at Thomas Hospital, an extremely busy hospital with long hallways, requiring lots of standing and walking. The schedule includes Monday to Friday plus every other weekend, with 8-hour shifts. Available shifts are 2nd shift from 2 PM to 10:30 PM and 3rd shift from 10:30 PM to 7 AM. No vacation or time-off requests are allowed during the contract period.
