Job Description
The primary role of the Phlebotomist I is to support various assigned tasks, including troubleshooting, training, and providing workflow recommendations. This position involves performing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, decontaminating areas, and updating patient information.
Responsibilities
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
- Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process clearly and courteously to patients.
- Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Understand and follow all physicians' orders.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
- Check test requisitions or computer labels against script to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport while maintaining specimen integrity.
- Store specimen samples according to required temperature and protocol.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attend annual department trainings.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to address inquiries.
Essential Skills
- Proficient in venipuncture and drawing blood.
- At least 1 year of recent phlebotomy experience in a hospital setting.
- Experience with drawing blood from all age groups, from pediatric to geriatric.
- Ability to handle a fast-paced environment, with experience drawing 40+ patients per day.
- Phlebotomy certification.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Customer service experience.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Experience in a hospital or fast-paced lab environment.
Work Environment
The position is located at Thomas Hospital in the Phlebotomy/Lab department, known for its extremely busy environment. The role involves long hours of standing and walking through long hallways in a 200-bed hospital. The work schedule is Monday to Friday, with every other weekend required, consisting of 8-hour shifts from 10:30 PM to 7 AM. The hospital staff includes nurses who assist with some draws, particularly during the 3rd shift. The workload includes 40-60 draws per day, with morning rounds becoming busier after 10:30 PM. New hires undergo a 1-2 week orientation and training, with the first week focused on system training and the second week involving hands-on training with a trainer. Candidates must be flexible and cannot request vacation or time off during the contract period.
