Staff Mechanical Engineer Location: Huntsville, Alabama Opportunity The Staff Mechanical Engineer, Sheet Molding Compound is responsible for optimizing the sheet molding compound (SMC) department performance including equipment, materials, etc. Consistently develops and applies advanced theories, methods, and research techniques in the investigation and solution of complex and advanced technical problems. Analyzes, evaluates, and plans methods of approach to and organizes a means to achieve the solution of complex technical problems. • Develop an in depth understanding of the relationships between compounding materials/processes and molding process/product performance. • Lead problem analysis of manufacturing process concerns in SMC department and provide technical troubleshooting support to maintenance and production teams as required. • Maintain and improve as needed process specifications, operating procedures, process controls, etc. in assigned areas of responsibility to help meet and exceed safety, quality, cost, production, and other department objectives. Also, work with maintenance team to optimize PM schedule, spare parts strategy, etc. • Monitor SMC material performance in molding department and develop/implement improvements to reduce material variation and improve molding performance metrics in relation to SMC including molded scrap reduction, equipment downtime reduction, and other applicable metrics. • Implement improvements as needed to improve process performance and reliability. • Continually investigate new equipment, processes and technology and implement as needed. • Investigate methods and/or materials to optimize the VIKRELL/SMC formulation/molding system(s) for minimum cost within acceptable product performance requirements or to improve product performance as needed at minimal cost. • Support quality engineering team as needed with any raw material quality issues. • Evaluate and/or develop new marketing/product/process concepts. • Investigate and develop new product/material testing methods. • Participate and manage (as assigned) plant expansion / capacity projects as well as capital improvement projects. Skills/Requirements: • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline from an ABET accredited engineering program, preferably mechanical and/or material science related. • 4-10 years of relevant work experience. • SMC or BMC formulation and compression molding process experience a plus. • Working knowledge of statistical analysis techniques to include fundamentals of experimental design. • Understanding of process equipment and control including mechanical, hydraulics, pneumatics, and PLC control.
