Job Title: Mechanical Designer – Siemens NX / Teamcenter (Sentinel Program)
Job Description
This role supports a high-visibility defense program as a Mechanical Designer, using Siemens NX and Teamcenter in a fully digital, paperless environment. You will create and revise mechanical and electro-mechanical designs, apply GD&T standards daily, and contribute to mission-critical systems that support national defense and space launch initiatives. The position requires a proactive designer who can work with minimal supervision, collaborate closely with engineers and other designers, and consistently deliver accurate, production-ready CAD models and drawings.
Responsibilities
- Develop layouts and prepare detailed and assembly drawings of moderate complexity for mechanical and electro-mechanical components using Siemens NX.
- Create, revise, and maintain 3D models and 2D drawings in accordance with standard drafting practices and established policies and standards.
- Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) methods daily to ensure proper fit, form, and function of components and assemblies.
- Use CAD and PLM software, including Siemens NX (Unigraphics) and Teamcenter, in accordance with defined drafting and configuration management standards.
- Work closely with designers and engineers to translate design concepts and requirements into accurate models, drawings, and product definition.
- Gather missing information and clarify requirements proactively to complete assignments without waiting for direction.
- Support the design of mechanical and electro-mechanical components that may include relatively simple parts as well as moderately complex assemblies.
- Prepare Product Manufacturing Information (PMI) within NX for paperless manufacturing environments, including work instructions, dimensions, and data references when applicable.
- Perform work in alignment with standard drafting practices, internal procedures, and program-specific guidelines.
- Collaborate with team members to ensure consistency, quality, and adherence to program standards across all design deliverables.
- Potentially hand off work to and provide guidance or oversight to lower-level drafters as needed to meet project deadlines.
- Contribute to design efforts that support defensive systems and launch systems for government and military customers, including next-generation interceptor and strategic deterrent programs.
- Maintain accurate documentation and data within the PLM environment, ensuring traceability and proper revision control.
- Identify issues in design data early, communicate risks or discrepancies, and work with stakeholders to resolve them efficiently.
- Demonstrate a proactive approach by anticipating next steps, seeking out needed information, and driving assigned work to completion without requiring constant direction.
Essential Skills
- 5–10 years of mechanical design experience in military, Department of Defense (DoD), or aerospace environments.
- Strong proficiency with Siemens NX (Unigraphics), with at least 2 years of recent, hands-on experience; familiarity with NX 9.0 or more recent, with current use of NX 2412 preferred.
- Minimum 8/10 proficiency level with Siemens NX and Teamcenter, demonstrated through recent project work.
- Daily, practical experience applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) in design and drafting activities.
- Solid understanding of GD&T methods to ensure proper fit, form, and function of mechanical and electro-mechanical components.
- Proficient use of CAD and PLM (vault) software tools, specifically Siemens NX and Teamcenter, in a production design environment.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision, plan next steps independently, and proactively obtain missing information needed to complete tasks.
- Experience performing work in accordance with standard drafting practices and established engineering and configuration standards.
- Ability to collaborate closely with designers and engineers to develop layouts and detail drawings of moderate complexity.
- Eligibility to obtain a secret security clearance, with U.S. citizenship required for clearance purposes.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with Product Manufacturing Information (PMI) in NX, preferably at least 1 year, supporting a fully paperless program.
- Experience in aerospace launch systems, missile defense, or strategic deterrent programs.
- Experience supporting design through launch for government and military customers.
- Familiarity with defensive systems such as next-generation interceptor programs and ground-based strategic deterrent systems.
- Ability to guide and oversee lower-level drafters, including handing off work and reviewing output for compliance with standards.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple design tasks, revisions, and configuration changes within PLM systems.
- Proactive, self-directed work style with a focus on completing assignments efficiently and with high quality.
Work Environment
You will work on mission-critical defense and space programs, supporting the design of launch systems and defensive systems such as next-generation interceptors and ground-based strategic deterrent platforms. Most work occurs in a professional office setting using Siemens NX and Teamcenter in a paperless, digital engineering environment. On occasion, you may perform work or collaborate in lab testing areas or manufacturing spaces to support integration and test activities. The position follows a 9/80 compressed work schedule, where you work nine-hour days for eight days over a two-week period, totaling 80 hours, with one additional day off (typically every other Friday). This schedule provides extended weekends every other week while maintaining full-time hours and supports a strong work-life balance. The culture emphasizes technical excellence, proactive problem solving, collaboration with engineering teams, and a commitment to supporting critical government and military missions.
