Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Phlebotomist III to join our team in Peoria. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging, recording maintenance data, decontamination, and updating patient information. You will collect and store specimens according to established procedures, explain the venipuncture process clearly and courteously, and demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles. You will ensure that all specimens are properly labeled, stored, and packaged for transport, and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data.
- Decontaminate equipment and update patient information.
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
- Explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collection clearly and courteously.
- Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Understand and follow all physicians' orders accurately.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
- Check test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport and store them according to required temperatures.
- Follow specific procedures to maintain the integrity of specimens during transport.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attend annual department trainings.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Essential Skills
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment.
- Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 5-7 years of experience in phlebotomy.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.
Work Environment
The work environment is a fast-paced lab or hospital setting. You will use various technologies and equipment, including straight needles, butterfly needles, centrifuges, and specimen storage containers. The position may require you to stand for extended periods and follow specific safety and hygiene protocols.
