We manufacture optical filters and coatings that are used in some of the most sophisticated instruments used in biotechnology, remote sensing, telecommunications, chemical engineering, robotics, and a variety of other fields. The optical filters and coatings are made on wafers. A wafer is a thin piece of semiconductor material in the shape of a very thin disc.
The Metrologist works in an office like setting with metrology machines and computers where they process the data. Their job is a Quality Assurance function of the manufacturing process. The company manufactures parts called wafers. Wafers are ultra thin, disc shaped components, about the size of a large dinner plate.
The Metrologist carefully loads the wafers into the machines, and the machines run their tests and spit out the data on the computer screen. The Metrologist runs multiple machines at once.
The data analysis isn't complicated, but there is a lot of data. They look for irregularities. Each wafer should be manufactured the same, so if they see irregularities in the data, then they know there is an issue.
