Job Description
We are seeking a detail-oriented and highly skilled Chemotherapy/IV Pharmacy Technician to join our pharmacy team. This role involves the preparation and compounding of sterile intravenous (IV) medications, including chemotherapy agents, in accordance with USP <797> and USP <800> standards. The technician will work closely with pharmacists and healthcare providers to ensure safe, accurate, and timely delivery of medications to patients undergoing cancer treatment.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and compound sterile IV and chemotherapy medications using aseptic technique.
- Accurately interpret and process medication orders, including cytotoxic and investigational agents.
- Label, package, and document compounded sterile preparations (CSPs) with appropriate beyond-use dates (BUDs).
- Maintain strict adherence to safety protocols and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
- Ensure compliance with USP <797>, USP <800>, and institutional policies.
- Maintain inventory of chemotherapy and IV supplies, ensuring proper storage and handling.
- Clean and disinfect IV preparation areas and equipment regularly.
- Collaborate with pharmacists to resolve medication-related issues or discrepancies.
- Participate in quality assurance and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Provide support in other pharmacy areas (inpatient, outpatient, or clinic) as needed.
Essential Skills
- Must have hospital or specialty pharmacy experience of 2 years.
- IV or chemotherapy experience needed (1-2 years).
- PTCB or Cpht certification required.
- DC Pharmacy Technician License.
- Proficiency in aseptic technique and sterile compounding.
- Strong customer service skills.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of an accredited Pharmacy Technician training program preferred.
- Minimum 1–2 years of experience in sterile compounding; oncology pharmacy experience preferred.
- Knowledge of chemotherapy agents, dosing, and handling procedures.
- Familiarity with USP <797> and USP <800> guidelines.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient safety.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-risk environment with minimal supervision.
Work Environment
Work is performed in a cleanroom or sterile compounding area and requires standing for extended periods and handling hazardous drugs with PPE. The position may involve exposure to chemotherapy agents and other hazardous substances. The working hours are Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM or 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with no weekends.
