Medical Laboratory Technician: Washington DC


Under the direction of a Technical Specialist/Team Leader and/or Division Manager, performs routine, moderate and designated complex laboratory tests requiring independent judgement and some interpretation. Monitors quality of reagents and working conditions of instruments.

Based on assigned work area within the Clinical Pathology Department, performs a variety of analytical tests within established guidelines.

2. Resolves problems with specimen, monitors and corrects factors that affect test procedures or results where possible. *

3. Recognizes abnormal test results, notifies appropriate personnel and completes documentation in computer records. *

4. Certifies quality control results are accurate. Alerts appropriate laboratory personnel when unable to resolve problems through the use of routine protocol. *

5. Provides results to physicians and nursing units as required, and according to standard department protocol. *

6. Decontaminates counter surfaces, instruments and general work area according to laboratory protocol. *

7. Conducts routine maintenance, instrument calibration, verification procedures and completes minor troubleshooting on instruments. *

8. Takes appropriate steps to resolve customer service problems according to established department protocol. *

9. May accession and label specimens thereby expediting testing and continuity of processing.

Additional Skills & Qualifications:

EDUCATION: A Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in Chemical, Physical, Biological, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field; or a M.D degree is required. However, these degree requirements are waived for high school (or equivalent) graduates who have successfully completed an official military training of at least 50 weeks duration, and who have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician).

PRIOR EXPERIENCE: Less than one month of previous job experience.

ON-THE-JOB EXPERIENCE: Approximately three to six months to gain familiarity with the Hospital environment, department routines and procedures, and the full range of job duties.

PROBLEM SOLVING: Job requires a relatively high level of problem-solving to find solutions to difficult human, technical, clinical or administrative problems.

INTERNAL CONTACTS: Internal contacts necessary to effectively explain and interpret information for others inside the Hospital.

INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT: Work is occasionally performed according to existing procedures and instructions but often requires analysis of problems and development of solutions. This involves determining appropriate methods and task sequences.

PATIENT CARE: Assists with patient care by performing duties that allow others to provide direct patient care (e.g., performing lab tests)
