Job Description
A Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Technician plays a vital role in managing and mitigating utility risks for infrastructure projects in Atlanta, Georgia. This position involves a variety of tasks including vehicle inspections, fieldwork, data collection, and analysis, as well as coordination with various stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Perform pre-trip vehicle inspections to ensure equipment is in working order.
- Attend team briefings to discuss daily projects, safety protocols, and challenges.
- Use advanced geophysical equipment to locate and mark underground utilities.
- Gather precise data on the location, depth, and type of utilities for accurate mapping.
- Perform vacuum excavation, known as potholing, to expose utilities and confirm their exact location.
- Analyze collected data and prepare detailed reports and maps.
- Coordinate with utility companies, contractors, and project managers to ensure accurate and up-to-date utility information.
- Conduct additional site visits if needed to verify data or address issues.
- Update project documentation to ensure all records are accurate and complete.
- Participate in end-of-day debriefings to review accomplishments and plan for the next day.
- Perform routine equipment maintenance to ensure functionality.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency with geophysical equipment, GPS, and data analysis software.
- Attention to detail to prevent costly mistakes during construction.
- Strong communication skills for effective coordination with stakeholders.
- 2-3 years of experience locating and designating utilities.
- Experience with RD & VI multi-frequency designating equipment.
- Ground-Penetrating Radar experience.
- Vac Truck experience is a plus.
- Utility locating and marking experience.
- Clean driving record / MVR required.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- High School Diploma / GED.
- 4+ years of experience as a SUE Field Technician II.
- Ability to read and interpret utility company prints and design plans.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Valid driver's license with good driving record.
- Ability to secure client-required identity verification such as TWIC and SWAC.
- Ability to obtain a DOT medical card for CMV operation (U.S. only).
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. and operate heavy tools and equipment.
- Ability to work outdoors in all climates.
- Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time, including up to 2-week continuous stays.
- OSHA Safety certifications are a plus.
Work Environment
The work environment involves working outside in various climates, using hand tools and excavation equipment. The role requires flexibility for travel to Florida and South Georgia office locations, with daily per diem and travel expenses fully covered.
