Formulation Development Scientist
Key Responsibilities
- Research, develop, and optimize personal care formulations from concept through commercialization.
- Perform bench-scale formulation work supporting new products, reformulations, and line extensions.
- Design and execute studies related to performance, aesthetics, and physical stability.
- Maintain accurate formulation records, specifications, batch instructions, and documentation.
- Stay current on cosmetic ingredients, formulation strategies, and emerging technologies; source and evaluate raw materials as needed.
Manufacturing Scale‑Up & Process Support
- Support scale-up from lab to pilot and full-scale manufacturing.
- Collaborate with Manufacturing, Engineering, and Production during tech transfer and initial production runs.
- Define and optimize processing parameters including order of addition, temperature, and mixing conditions.
- Troubleshoot formulation and process issues; recommend improvements to enhance manufacturability and consistency.
Collaboration & Laboratory Operations
- Provide formulation expertise to cross-functional teams and support technical decision-making.
- Evaluate and qualify alternate raw materials to ensure manufacturing continuity.
- Support routine lab operations, maintain safe and organized workspaces, and mentor junior R&D staff.
- Develop protocols, methods, and SOPs as needed; comply with GMP and safety practices.
- Promote company values (ASPIRE) and perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Cosmetic Science
Minimum of 3 years of formulation experience in personal care or cosmetic science
Strong experience in cosmetic and personal care formulation chemistry.
Direct experience with bench-scale formulation development.
Working understanding of scale-up, pilot batching, and tech transfer to manufacturing.
Insight into formulation–process relationships such as mixing, heating/cooling, and materials handling.
Effective problem solver with a focus on manufacturable, robust formulations.
Collaborative team player across R&D and Manufacturing functions.
Experience with regulatory affairs and FDA regulations
Job Type & LocationThis is a Permanent position based out of Cedar Rapids, IA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $50000.00 - $75000.00/yr.
