Job Description
The Maintenance Technician on second shift supports reliable production by troubleshooting and repairing mechanical and electrical systems on equipment used to manufacture windows and doors. This role focuses on diagnosing issues, performing preventative maintenance, and ensuring safe, efficient operation of machinery such as conveyors, hydraulics, pneumatics, motors, saws, overhead cranes, and related equipment. The technician works with a high degree of autonomy, accurately logs all maintenance activities, and helps maintain an organized inventory for the maintenance department.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot and repair mechanical and electrical issues on production equipment used in window and door manufacturing.
- Perform preventative maintenance on machinery including conveyors, hydraulics, pneumatics, gearboxes, motors, bearings, saws, overhead cranes, and related systems.
- Diagnose and repair conveyors, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, pneumatic systems, and 3-phase motors operating at 480 volts.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and diagrams for production equipment to identify faults and plan repairs.
- Use electrical and mechanical testing equipment to perform electrical troubleshooting, identify shortages, and verify proper operation after repairs.
- Log all maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections accurately in maintenance software, including SAP or similar systems.
- Monitor and help manage maintenance department inventory, ensuring tools, parts, and materials are available when needed.
- Support industrial automation by troubleshooting PLC-controlled equipment and automation systems; perform PLC troubleshooting as needed (programming not required).
- Collaborate with production leaders and other team members to prioritize and complete urgent maintenance and repair tasks during second shift.
- Work independently as the sole maintenance technician on second shift, making timely decisions and taking ownership of equipment uptime.
- Perform maintenance repair tasks safely and in accordance with company procedures and industry best practices.
- Travel between plant locations during second shift as needed to support maintenance needs at multiple facilities.
- Maintain a clean, organized work area and ensure tools and equipment on the maintenance cart are properly stored and maintained.
- Minimum 2+ years of experience in industrial maintenance or equivalent education in a related field.
- Hands-on experience with industrial maintenance in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong mechanical skills with experience working on hydraulics, pneumatics, bearings, gearboxes, presses, saws, conveyors, and related equipment.
- Experience performing troubleshooting and preventative maintenance on mechanical systems.
- Electrical maintenance experience, including AC/DC motors, 3-phase motors, 480-volt systems, wiring, conduit, and electrical testing equipment.
- Proficiency in electrical troubleshooting, including identifying and repairing shorts and other electrical faults.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and diagrams for mechanical and electrical systems.
- Experience with maintenance logging and documentation using maintenance software, such as SAP or similar systems.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, especially as the only maintenance technician on the shift.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy when diagnosing issues and documenting work.
- Effective problem-solving skills to quickly identify root causes and implement lasting repairs.
- Solid time management skills to prioritize multiple maintenance tasks and respond to urgent needs.
- Experience with industrial automation and PLC-controlled equipment.
- Ability to perform PLC troubleshooting and work with PLC control systems; programming experience is not required but troubleshooting is a plus.
- Familiarity with robotics or automated systems in a manufacturing environment.
- Experience working with conveyors, overhead cranes, and other material handling equipment.
- Comfort using a variety of hand tools, power tools, and testing instruments for maintenance repair.
- Experience working with maintenance logs and structured maintenance programs focused on preventative maintenance.
- Strong communication skills to coordinate with production leaders and other departments.
- Demonstrated reliability and ownership mindset in a maintenance or industrial role.

Work Environment
This role is based primarily in a newer manufacturing facility with main responsibilities at the West Des Moines plant, while also supporting a nearby Norwalk location as needed. The position is on second shift, working from 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., and includes a shift differential. You will be the sole maintenance technician on this shift and will collaborate closely with production leaders to address the most urgent maintenance and repair needs. The plant environment is not climate controlled, so it can be hot during the summer and cooler near doors in the winter. To support efficiency, you will have access to a golf cart equipped with the tools and equipment needed to travel between different areas of the plant and, when required, to move between facilities during second shift. The work environment centers on industrial production equipment, including conveyors, hydraulics, pneumatics, motors, and automated systems, providing a hands-on, fast-paced setting where safety, responsiveness, and technical skill are essential.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $35.00/hr.
