Job Title: Field Service Technician
Job Description
This Field Service Technician role offers the opportunity to work independently in demanding industrial environments, performing hands-on mechanical and electrical troubleshooting, inspections, repairs, and equipment startups. You will work on motors, gearboxes, chains, augers, and related machinery while traveling frequently to customer sites. The position suits an experienced, high-level technician who learns quickly, moves with urgency, and operates with minimal supervision. You will play a key role in supporting a rapidly growing, niche industrial business with strong, stable demand and significant long-term growth potential.
Responsibilities
- Perform mechanical and electrical troubleshooting, inspections, repairs, and startups on motors, gearboxes, chains, augers, and related industrial equipment.
- Use hand and power tools to drill and tap stainless steel, assemble and disassemble components, and complete mechanical repairs in the field.
- Diagnose equipment issues by observation and sound, identifying problems proactively without waiting for detailed direction.
- Work safely and effectively in industrial environments that may be rusty, greasy, dirty, or wet, including tight or awkward spaces, ladders, water channels, wastewater areas, and confined spaces.
- Set up, configure, and adjust variable frequency drives (VFDs), including changing parameters to match application requirements.
- Use a multimeter and other electrical test equipment to verify voltages, check motor controls, and confirm proper operation of motor protection and safety devices.
- Work with both de-energized and live power while strictly following electrical safety practices and site safety procedures.
- Collaborate with other contractors and site teams on active or under-construction sites, coordinating work and maintaining clear communication.
- Communicate effectively with small and large groups on-site, explaining findings, repair plans, and equipment status.
- Prepare clear, detailed daily service reports documenting work performed, issues found, parts used, and recommendations for follow-up.
- Manage time and priorities independently in the field, making sound decisions with minimal supervision.
- Travel extensively to customer sites, maintaining a professional presence and representing the service team at a high standard.
Essential Skills
- At least 5 years of field service technician experience.
- At least 5 years of electro-mechanical experience in industrial environments.
- Strong mechanical skills, including drilling and tapping stainless steel, using hand and power tools, and performing inspections and repairs.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot mechanical equipment by sight and sound, with strong diagnostic and observation skills.
- Solid electrical skills, including proficiency with a multimeter, motor controls, VFD setup and parameter changes, and verification of motor protection and safety devices.
- Demonstrated experience working safely with both de-energized and live electrical power.
- Ability to work effectively in industrial conditions such as rusty, greasy, dirty, wet, tight, or awkward spaces, including on ladders and in confined areas.
- Strong verbal communication skills, including comfort speaking with small to large groups on-site.
- Strong written communication skills with the ability to write clear, detailed daily reports.
- Proven ability to operate independently at a high level with minimal supervision.
- Comfort traveling up to 100% of the time (leave Monday, come home Friday).
- Residence within approximately one hour of an international airport to support frequent travel in continental U.S. and Canada.
Work Environment
This role is field-based with approximately 85%-100% travel to customer sites, making proximity to an international airport essential. You will work in industrial environments that may be rusty, greasy, dirty, or wet, often in tight or awkward spaces, on ladders, near water channels, in wastewater areas, and in confined spaces. Sites may be fully operational facilities or active construction environments with other contractors present. The service organization is in a strong growth phase, with sales outpacing current service capacity, and the goal is to build a stable, well-structured team that can support customers effectively without constantly operating in crisis mode. The broader business operates in a solid, niche industrial market that is described as resilient to economic downturns, with strong sales and significant growth potential based on the specialized machinery it represents.
