The Physics Division at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a Laboratory Technician to join the Low Energy Technical Support Group, which supports experimental operations at the Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS)-a national user facility for nuclear and atomic physics research.

Working alongside scientists from the Low Energy Research Group and a global user community, the technician will contribute to the day-to-day maintenance and technical operations of experimental systems. This role is essential to ensuring the safe, efficient, and uninterrupted execution of experiments in a complex research environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform routine maintenance, servicing, and storage of experimental equipment
  • Move and install experimental systems and components across the ATLAS facility
  • Procure parts and materials; coordinate shipping and receiving with vendors and partner institutions
  • Troubleshoot and resolve basic equipment faults to minimize experimental downtime
  • Collaborate with physicists, technical support staff, and ATLAS operations personnel to modify or upgrade experimental areas and systems
  • Maintain clean, safe, and organized laboratory workspaces and storage areas
Position Requirements
  • Technical background in engineering, physics, or a related field
  • Proficiency using basic laboratory tools, mechanical systems, and workshop equipment
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary research environment
  • Competence using standard software tools, including Microsoft Office and web-based systems for procurement, safety documentation, and training
  • A demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and adherence to safety procedures
  • Ability to model Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork
Preferred Qualifications

Practical experience with one or more of the following systems and practices:
  • Vacuum systems
  • Cryogenics (handling liquid nitrogen, helium)
  • Basic electrical systems
  • Rigging and crane operation
  • Pressurized gas cylinders
  • Power tools and machine shop equipment
This position offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of hands-on technical work and groundbreaking physics research. The responsibilities listed above are not exhaustive; the selected candidate may be assigned additional duties as necessary to support the evolving needs of the facility.

ST1: High School or Associates and 1-3+ years of experience, or equivalent

The expected hiring range for this position is $24.40 - $36.50

ST2: Associates and 5+ years of experience, or equivalent

The expected hiring range for this position is $30.02 - $44.90
