Our client is looking to do a contract to hire for their Underwriting Data Science team for a Data Science Manager. This individual is to replace a recent team member who left AF Group (Levi Self). This person must have a background specifically within the Insurance Industry and specifically within underwriting. This individual will be managing 3 resources on the underwriting team and interact with the other data science team that is more focused in the claims area. They will be meeting with customers, defining business opportunities and designing models that might help, working with Data Engineers to obtain/prep data, building models, iterating with customer, presenting results, working with customer to design implementation, implementing the model, monitoring the results, continuing to improve the model.

Where is the Data Coming from?

That data includes our own structured data (SQL), as well as we are beginning to explore unstructured data (Hadoop) and third party data we purchase from Experian. We also use many of the government databases i.e. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

We bring all that data together and used to build predictive models. Most of the models are classification models. One of our biggest tools is Generalized Linear Modeling (GLM) (a sophisticated and advanced form of linear regression) and various forms of Machine learning. Machine Learning is important but not required for this role but GLM would be required.

What is the Manager looking for?

Someone who is able to interact with the customer and turn the customer's needs into something that can be modeled. The ability to work with the customer to build something they will want and help the customer to understand how they can use it successfully.
