Technologists in Forensic Labs focus on drug screening working within or between three divisions:

Forensic Screening:

Performs automated immunoassays screening usually urine samples

Testing is mostly through machine automation

Sometimes use Mass Spectrometry to confirm positive samples

Biochemistry backgrounds do well here

Forensic Extractions:

Extracts confirming samples for analysis using gas or liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry. The actual chromatography and mass spectrometry are performed in instrumentation.

Organic extractions, pulling drug out of samples to isolate for analysis

Similar to bench chemistry, not analytical

Traditional organic chemistry experience/ interest does well here

Forensic Instrumentations:

Set up on GCM and GLC/MS

Perform chromatography and mass spectrometry on extracted samples

Run methods, looking at data, analyzing and reporting results, verifying each other's work

Analytical chemistry experience/interest does well here

All the work is highly regulated and SOP based

Provides opportunity for excellent foundational experience and work experience. Typically new grads enjoy this environment to learn.

Additional Skills & Qualifications:

Bachelors degree in science (biology, chemistry, biochemistry, etc)

Close attention to detail (verified by references)

Excellent research and problem resolution skills

Able to work in a fast paced production environment to meet established turnaround times

Proven ability to prioritize tasks and manage time

Must be able to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail

Nice to have qualification:

Previous experience working in a repetitive or high volume role (serving, food industry, etc)

They have seen a lot of success with individuals who are wanting to be in a lab during their gap year before additional schooling, entry level biology,
