Job Description
The Phlebotomist supports a high-volume clinical laboratory by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, processing and handling specimens according to strict protocols, and ensuring accurate documentation and patient information updates. This role also contributes to troubleshooting workflow issues, training others as needed, and recommending process improvements to maintain efficient and high-quality laboratory operations.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and test requirements.
- Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients of all ages to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, verifying that all information is accurate and complete.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the specific test order, maintaining specimen integrity at all times.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
- Package specimens securely and in accordance with protocol for transport, following all procedures necessary to maintain specimen stability.
- Store specimens at the required temperature and place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes, following protocol for each test type.
- Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct specimen collection, handling, and processing.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and infection control standards.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to keep equipment and work areas clean and functional.
- Update and maintain accurate patient information and specimen data in laboratory systems.
- Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results as appropriate to satisfy inquiries, maintaining confidentiality and accuracy.
- Assist with troubleshooting workflow issues and contribute recommendations to improve processes and efficiency.
- Support training activities by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and specimen handling procedures when needed.
- Proven experience performing venipunctures and blood draws, including use of both straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Minimum of 2+ years of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment.
- Strong phlebotomy skills, including blood collection, specimen labeling, and proper specimen handling.
- Ability to collect and process a variety of specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, following established protocols.
- Demonstrated experience with centrifuging specimens and preparing samples for testing or transport.
- Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all identifying information.
- Attention to detail in labeling, packaging, and storing specimens to maintain integrity and prevent errors.
- Clear and courteous communication skills to explain procedures to patients and respond to inquiries by phone.
- Understanding of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations and general laboratory safety practices.
- Customer service skills and a patient-centered approach when interacting with individuals of all ages.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic data entry and documentation.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Experience working with pediatric patients and the ability to perform blood draws on all age groups.
- Background in a medical or clinical laboratory environment, including familiarity with laboratory workflows and specimen processing.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced setting while maintaining accuracy and quality.
- Strong organizational skills to handle high specimen volumes and maintain proper documentation.
- Comfort with reading and communicating laboratory results in accordance with organizational policies.
- 0–2 additional years of related experience beyond the minimum requirements is beneficial.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Mount Laurel, NJ.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $23.00 - $23.00/hr.
