Medical Laboratory Technician

A medical lab technician is a highly skilled health professional who tests and analyzes blood and other body substances to aid health care providers in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Medical technicians are responsible for operating and maintaining the equipment used to analyze specimens and ensuring that automated and manual tests are completed in an accurate and timely manner.

Roles and responsibilities include: preparing and testing specimens, including proficiency testing and manual procedures, and reporting appropriately according to protocol; operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting moderately complex equipment; utilizing moderately complex information systems; collecting and interpreting data; performing and interpreting quality control; maintaining a compliant environment, including adherence to all lab and hospital procedures, NYS, TJC, HIPAA standards, infection control, and safety guidelines; participating in quality assurance and performance improvement activities and maintaining inter-and intra-departmental workflow by cooperating with others; maintaining adequate inventory and conserving resources; maintaining professional and technical knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; and being flexible in assuming additional responsibilities as assigned.
