Job Description

The Jr. Resident Engineer will work on two NYC Parks Department projects throughout the city. This role involves visiting multiple sites daily, managing contractors, and ensuring the health and reconstruction of city sidewalks and trees. The Resident Engineer will also need to communicate effectively with clients, review contract line items, and oversee various construction activities such as saw cutting, excavation, planting, and concrete restoration.


Responsibilities

  • Visit multiple sites daily, sometimes up to 10, based on workflow for the reconstruction of city sidewalks and tree health.
  • Manage small and large contractors on the streets and in the parks.
  • Communicate effectively with the client and maintain excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Review contract line items and ensure compliance.
  • Perform oversight services including saw cutting, excavation, planting, concrete restoration, and back checks to guarantee punch list items.
  • Receive daily instructions via email from the Project Manager.
  • Meet the Superintendent at the job site by 7 AM.
  • Observe contractors on-site and coordinate with the Project Manager to ensure adequate manpower.
  • Ensure safety on-site, including making sure contractors wear PPE.
  • Record and track measurements for pay items based on the amount of work completed, such as trees planted and excavation.
  • Ensure all activities are performed at ground level, with no climbing or work on active roadways.

Essential Skills

  • Associates degree in forestry, arboriculture, horticulture, or related plant science field; or construction project management and/or civil engineering with 2 years of related work experience.
  • Bachelor's degree with 1 year of related experience.
  • Master's degree with 6 months of related experience.
  • 1+ years of related work experience.
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Performing daily field reporting and construction oversight tasks.
  • Knowledge of civil engineering and construction oversight
  • MUST HAVE PERSONAL VEHICLE

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Knowledge of plant species.
  • Experience working for a landscaper for several years or summers.
  • Ability to drive to work sites.

Work Environment

Work will be throughout the five boroughs, most likely tied to one borough, on Parks Department jobs. The typical work hours are from 7 AM to 3 PM. The role requires working outdoors in various weather conditions and entails long-term growth opportunities.
