Job Purpose
The role of Senior Director, Bioethics, R&D Bioethics and Policy, provides internal and external strategic thought leadership on the development of Bioethics positions and recommendations for areas impacting R&D strategy and delivery in collaboration with the Head OCMO, cross-functional stakeholders on global, regional and country level. The role will be responsible for applied Bioethics knowledge and capability building and implementation. The role will represent GSK on industry associations (EFPIA, PhRMA) for R&D Bioethics forums, and provide thought leadership to develop meaningful Bioethics guidance at forums like Biopharmaceutical Industry Bioethics Forum (BIBF) enhancing the GSK reputation. The role is also responsible for coordination of consultations with external experts when ethical issues, questions or conflicts arise that are related to patient care. The role responsibilities include responding to Bioethics consultation requests, meeting with key members of the R&D team(s), and, when appropriate, consulting with the offices of the Chief Medical Officer, Legal Counsel and Risk Management.

Key Responsibilities
- Provides leadership for GSK's Global Bioethics program, executing on the overall strategic direction, and the creation and administration of structured and collaborative mechanisms to proactively and effectively address emerging bioethics issues and challenges.
- In the role as Secretary, manages the GSK Bioethics forums and Council, comprised of internal leaders and external ethics experts, to provide advice on key bioethics topics.
- Drives discussions and collaborations with business partners to develop fair and robust positions on R&D issues and ethical dilemmas. Maintains and leverages effective relationships with senior leaders in R&D, Compliance, Legal, CPO organization, globally and in the regions/countries to ensure Bioethics decision-making is understood and applied consistently.
- Provides input and guidance on operational & communications strategies to support effective and impactful implementation and embedding a Bioethics mindset in R&D along with deep subject matter expertise.
- Serves as advisor to teams and senior leaders on complex global bioethics topics.
- Bridges bioethics with technology ethics and represents OCMO and the CMO on Tech-related councils and forums.
- Drives the advancement of bioethics and establishes GSK as an industry leader in advocating pragmatic, innovative and ethical positions to complex Bioethics dilemmas.
- Serves as a mentor and guardian of the Bioethics Ambassadors network and provides development opportunities for emerging bioethics leaders. Educates on ethical standards and value-driven decision making.
- Assesses the ethical implications of R&D procedures and practices that carry significant moral implications and seek to mitigate these concerns with an eye toward applying sound moral and ethical principles.
- Ensures that GSK understands and responds to the evolving societal expectations of our medicines/vaccines and our practices, acting with high ethics standards, and protecting the interests of subjects and patients. Ensures GSK has a well- researched position on key bioethics issues of regional, national, and international importance.
Basic Qualifications:
We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
- Masters Degree in Bioethics or Masters Degree with 10+ experience within BioEthics
- 12+ years of experience in BioEthics
- Pharmaceutical/industry experience in BioEthics
If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
- Industry experience in Compliance, Governance, or Legal background
- Significant knowledge and understanding of R&D environment, policies and procedures and applicable regulation requirements.
- Strong understanding of GSK Organisation (GSK Corporate, GSK Pharma and GSK Vaccines) strategy. Able to build strong relationships and networks across GSK organization.
- Ability to incorporate strategy and organizational considerations.
- Proven track record in engaging and managing medium to large teams as line and matrix leader in global, local and remote environment.
- Excellent communication and presentations skills, ability to facilitate interfaces within an extended network, proven experience in negotiating and influencing at senior levels of the organization.
- Possesses excellent English language written and verbal communication skills in addition to proven negotiation skills.
- Excellent leadership skills and promotes motivation and empowerment of others to accomplish individual, team and organizational objectives.
- Ability to resolve issues with an enterprise thinking mind set.
- Ability to resolve problems with thoughtful use of knowledge, information and networks in a flexible way and to be successful in a matrix environment.
- Strong influencing skills and ability to manage large multidisciplinary teams and to work with vast diversity of roles at different levels within GSK
- S trengthens the Bioethics capability of R&D through coaching, advising, developing a Bioethics curriculum, cultivating a culture of empowerment, accountability and high pressure.
