Job Title: Phlebotomist I


Job Description

The primary role of a Phlebotomist I is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. This position involves drawing blood, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, decontamination, and updating patient information.


Responsibilities

  • Conduct blood draws using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
  • Label specimens and centrifuge them according to test orders.
  • Store specimens in accordance with established procedures and required temperatures.
  • Explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collection methods in a clear and courteous manner.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes accurately.
  • Package specimens for transport and ensure their integrity.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department trainings.
  • Handle telephone inquiries and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Essential Skills

  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment.
  • Minimum of 6 months' experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 0-2 years of experience.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 1+ years of experience in phlebotomy.
  • Understanding of physicians' orders.

Work Environment

The work environment includes a fast-paced lab or hospital setting. The role requires adherence to safety regulations, and the ability to handle specimens with care to maintain their integrity during transport. Dress code and attire should be appropriate for laboratory work.
