Job Title: Phlebotomist I


Job Description

The primary role of a Phlebotomist I is to assist in performing various duties, troubleshoot issues, provide training, and suggest workflow improvements. This position is crucial in ensuring the efficient operation of specimen collection and handling processes.


Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and update patient information.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
  • Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process clearly and courteously.
  • Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
  • Interpret and follow physicians' orders accurately.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
  • Ensure 100% accuracy in matching test requisitions or computer labels against scripts.
  • Package specimens for transport, maintaining specimen integrity according to protocol.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department trainings.
  • Answer telephone inquiries and provide laboratory results as needed.

Essential Skills

  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, if required.
  • Minimum of 6 months' experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 0-2 years of related experience.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 1+ years of experience in phlebotomy.

Work Environment

This role is situated in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting. It requires adherence to safety and regulatory standards. The work environment involves interacting with patients and handling specimens using various techniques and equipment. Dress code and specific protocols must be followed to ensure the safety and integrity of the specimens.
