Job Title: Power Electronics Engineer

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Power Electronics Engineer with 5–8 years of relevant technical experience to support the design, integration, and sustainment of advanced Integrated Power Systems (IPS) for U.S. Navy surface combatants. This position involves direct collaboration with NAVSEA, warfare centers, and shipboard teams to deliver reliable and mission-ready naval power systems.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and work with various DDG equipment like circuit breakers, relays, multimeters, and oscilloscopes.
  • Design and develop high-reliability power conversion systems (AC/DC, DC/DC, motor controllers, energy storage interfaces) supporting naval propulsion and auxiliary loads.
  • Provide engineering leadership in the analysis, optimization, and integration of Hybrid Electric Drive (HED) systems and shipboard power distribution components.
  • Lead or support PCB development for embedded power control systems; manage BOMs, layout, and integration with shipboard electrical architectures.
  • Conduct system-level modeling, simulation, and performance evaluation using tools such as LTspice, PLECS, or MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Support failure analysis, obsolescence resolution, and component qualification efforts, including MTBF analysis, derating studies, and compliance testing.
  • Prepare and review technical deliverables, including power flow diagrams, interface control documents, system specs, and validation reports.
  • Assist with shipboard installations, operational verification, troubleshooting, and certification of IPS hardware and controls in coordination with warfare centers and fleet support teams.

Essential Skills

  • 5-8 years of professional experience in power electronics, electrical system integration, or embedded controls, preferably in a defense or maritime environment.
  • Troubleshooting experience with circuit breakers, relays, multimeters, and oscilloscopes.
  • Ability to attain US Security clearance.
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Proven experience designing and integrating high-power systems such as HED, propulsion converters, or advanced battery systems.
  • Familiarity with EMI/EMC, MIL-STD compliance, and shipboard safety/environmental standards (e.g., MIL-STD-1399, IEEE 45, NAVSEA standards).
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with government stakeholders, review/redline technical documentation, and lead engineering efforts through development lifecycles.
  • U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance.

Work Environment

Engineering support is provided by the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Philadelphia Division (NSWCPD). The team supports the construction and life cycle of US Navy ships and related test sites, focusing on advanced electrical power and propulsion systems. Work involves integrating improvements for various ship classes, including the DDG-1000 Class Integrated Power System (IPS) and the DDG-51 Class Flight III. The environment emphasizes enhancing survivability and continuity of electrical power supply, ensuring the ship can continue its missions even if damaged.
