Job Title: Panel Assembler

Job Description

This role is responsible for the entire build process, from the physical layout and mounting of components to the complex point-to-point wiring and final quality assurance testing. Success in this position requires a deep understanding of electrical principles, a commitment to safety and quality standards, and an exceptional eye for detail.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret mechanical layout drawings and electrical schematics to precisely position and mount components within enclosures.
  • Perform necessary enclosure modifications, including drilling, tapping, and cutting openings for conduits, switches, and HMIs using hand and power tools.
  • Ensure all components are laid out logically, providing proper clearance for wiring, maintenance, and ventilation in accordance with NEC and UL 508A standards.
  • Lay out and affix terminal blocks, wire ducts, DIN rail, and other hardware.
  • Provide feedback to the engineering team on how to make the design more manufacturable or cost-effective.
  • Execute complex point-to-point wiring of all electrical components, including PLCs, VFDs, motor starters, relays, power supplies, and control devices, based on detailed schematics.
  • Ensure all wiring is routed neatly, organized in wire ducts, and properly bundled and labeled for clarity and serviceability.
  • Select appropriate wire gauges and colors according to specifications and industry standards.
  • Perform all wire terminations correctly, ensuring secure crimps and connections using calibrated hand tools.
  • Conduct thorough in-process and final quality checks to ensure the panel is built exactly to print.
  • Perform point-to-point continuity testing using a multimeter to verify all wiring is correct and free of shorts.
  • Conduct power-on tests to ensure the panel functions as designed, verifying indicator lights, switches, and basic I/O functionality.
  • Identify and document any discrepancies between the build and the schematics, creating "as-built" red-line markups for the engineering team.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience building and wiring industrial control panels in a manufacturing or panel shop environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layout drawings.
  • Proficiency with hand and power tools used in panel building (e.g., wire strippers, crimpers, drills, jigsaws, knockout punches).
  • Strong understanding of basic electrical theory and common control components (relays, contactors, breakers, PLCs, VFDs).
