Job Description
As a Field Service Engineer II, you will be the technical presence at customer sites, responsible for the installation, calibration, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of precision vacuum platforms like Spector IBD and related ion beam systems. These systems feature ion sources, optical monitoring systems, cryogenic and turbo-molecular pumps, and sophisticated process control software. You will diagnose problems, implement fixes, and bring systems back to production readiness, often while the customer's manufacturing team awaits your solution.
Responsibilities
- Install, upgrade, calibrate, and qualify ion beam systems at customer sites, managing the process from equipment delivery through acceptance testing to ensure systems meet performance specifications and customer production requirements.
- Diagnose and resolve complex system issues across mechanical, electrical, vacuum, and software subsystems using structured troubleshooting to identify root causes and implement lasting corrective actions.
- Perform preventive maintenance in accordance with established protocols, documenting system condition, component wear, and emerging risks to minimize unplanned downtime.
- Act as the on-site technical lead for assigned customers, managing field activities, communicating status clearly, and prioritizing workstreams in real-time based on operational impact.
- Maintain detailed service documentation for every engagement, including diagnostics, root cause findings, actions taken, and parts utilized, providing critical data to improve system reliability across the installed base.
- Build strong, trust-based relationships with customer engineering and maintenance teams, becoming a go-to resource through technical expertise, reliability, and responsiveness.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to customer technicians and junior field service engineers, enhancing overall capability and consistency in system support.
- 2+ years of experience as a Field Service Engineer.
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or equivalent hands-on experience, including military technical training.
- Knowledge of vacuum systems, electromechanical troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and semiconductor safety.
- Proficiency in electrical, mechanical, electronics, repair, customer service, preventive maintenance, and using hand tools.
- Experience with calibration, installation assembly, and troubleshooting of vacuum platforms and turbo-molecular pumps.
You will have the opportunity to work on AOI products and help get their facility up to speed. The role includes traveling between sites and participating in live installations to gain hands-on experience. Training will take place at the factory locations in New Jersey or Beverly, MA, where some of the machines are being built. The role offers flexibility and opportunities for growth in a dynamic environment.
