Reality Labs (RL) Sensors Team at Meta is helping build novel products in Augmented and Virtual Reality. Our team explores, develops, and delivers new cutting-edge sensing technologies that serve as the foundation of current and future AR/MR products at Meta. Sensors are a crucial component for enabling core features on our products such as world-locked rendering, hand, body & eye tracking, image stabilization, scene reconstruction, mapping, and health sensing. The team is composed of a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and scientists. We work cross-functionally across multiple products to deliver sensing solutions tailored for the requirements and constraints of each particular product/feature and develop platform technologies that can be reutilized across multiple products and product lines. We are looking for candidates with experience in MEMS sensor development to assist with the development of novel hardware and software systems within the RL Motion Sensors Team, while collaborating with experts across multiple domains. In this role you will lead the research, architecture, design, and prototyping of novel MEMS sensors. You will collaborate with internal and external engineering and research partners to develop sensing technologies that will help bridge virtual and real worlds.

Research Scientist - Sensors Responsibilities:
  • Research, architect, design, and prototype novel MEMS sensors for AR/MR, while balancing system-level constraints on size, weight, power, and cost.
  • Develop relationships and lead engagements with internal and external industrial and research partners to develop and scale critical sensor technologies.
  • Collaborate with other engineers and researchers across Meta to develop new concepts and technologies for next generation sensors that advance the state-of-the-art in AR/MR systems.
  • Mentor other engineers and researchers on the team, provide direction and guidance to improve quality and depth of the engineering work in the broader team.
  • Work with the team to help design, setup, and run practical experiments related to sensor systems.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • 5+ years industry experience, directly contributing to development of Micro-electro-mechanical System (MEMS) sensors such as ultrasonic transducers, microphones, pressure sensors, gyroscopes, and/or accelerometers.
  • Demonstrated experience in modeling MEMS sensors using FEA frameworks such as COMSOL and ANSYS, as well as system modeling software such as Simulink and Cadence.
  • Proven understanding of acoustics and/or vibratory systems.
  • Familiarity with common MEMS fabrication processes such as lithography, deposition, etching, bonding, as well as back-end processes such as die attachment, wire-bonding, and packaging.
  • Familiarity with MEMS front-end electronics and control systems.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, related engineering disciplines or equivalent experience.
  • Proven understanding of piezoelectric and/or electrostatic transduction mechanisms.
  • Experience with common digital signal processing techniques such as digital filtering, Fourier transform, and I/Q demodulation.
  • Demonstrated experience in using Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools such as SolidWorks, NX, Catia, or similar software.
  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by patents and first-authored publications.
  • Familiarity with the emerging Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality technologies.
  • Demonstrated experience in cross-group and cross-culture collaboration.
  • High levels of creativity and quick problem-solving skills.
About Meta:

Meta builds technologies that help people connect, find communities, and grow businesses. When Facebook launched in 2004, it changed the way people connect. Apps like Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp further empowered billions around the world. Now, Meta is moving beyond 2D screens toward immersive experiences like augmented and virtual reality to help build the next evolution in social technology. People who choose to build their careers by building with us at Meta help shape a future that will take us beyond what digital connection makes possible today-beyond the constraints of screens, the limits of distance, and even the rules of physics.
