Job Description
The primary role of a Phlebotomist is to assist in performing various duties, troubleshoot issues, provide training, and make workflow recommendations. The position involves working in a fast-paced environment and requires excellent customer service skills.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data.
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
- Explain venipuncture and specimen collection processes in a clear and courteous manner.
- Demonstrate techniques using straight and butterfly needles.
- Understand all physicians' orders and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
- Ensure accuracy by checking all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts.
- Package specimens for transport and store them at the required temperature.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and attend annual department training.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Essential Skills
- 1+ years of phlebotomy experience in a hospital or clinical setting
- can perform 30+ blood draws/volume, including all age groups from pediatric to geriatric.
- Strong phlebotomy skills, including blood draw and specimen collection and processing.
- Strong customer service skills.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Flexibility to work at different sites.
- Knowledge in chemistry, hematology, microbiology, coagulation, urinalysis.
- High school diploma required; 2+ years of experience preferred.
Work Environment
Phlebotomists will cover the Birmingham/Hoover/Tuscaloosa area, working as travelers/floater and for IOP accounts. The position requires the ability to drive up to one hour, with mileage expenses covered. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, with a one-hour lunch break. Phlebotomists will be working at fast-paced sites, drawing and processing blood, urine, and other specimens, with an expected 35-40 draws per day. Good customer service is essential.
