Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated Medical Lab Scientist I to join our dynamic laboratory team. This role involves performing routine and complex technical procedures in accordance with departmental Standard Operating Procedures to ensure quality patient care.
Responsibilities
- Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria.
- Perform routine and complex technical procedures and functions according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures.
- Monitor, operate, and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality.
- Make technical decisions regarding testing and problem solving.
- Prepare, test, and evaluate new reagents or controls.
- Report accurate and timely test results to deliver quality patient care.
- Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures.
- Identify and replenish testing bench supplies as necessary.
- Assist with processing of specimens when needed.
- Maintain a safe work environment and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
Essential Skills
- Minimum 0-2 years of clinical laboratory testing experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology, or meet local regulatory CLIA State requirements.
- Must have experience with Microbiology testing, including plate reading and gram staining.
- Proficient in laboratory information systems and familiar with Cerner or Epic.
- ASCP or AMT certification preferred or required depending on state regulations.
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
- High level of attention to detail, along with strong communication and organizational skills.
- Must be able to pass a standardized color vision screen.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- State Medical Technologist license may be required depending on state regulations.
- Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts depending on business needs.
Work Environment
The position is based in Birmingham, AL. You will be working in the Micro Lab during the first shift from 9am to 5pm. The environment is supportive and collaborative, offering opportunities for training in reading plates and gram stains, and setting up laboratory processes.
