Job Title: GNC Engineer
Job Description
The GNC Engineer is responsible for ensuring the engineering needs are met while assisting in the planning and deployment of the design of components and their integration into systems. This role requires a multi-disciplinary work history, including GN&C, flight testing, PCB Design, and software projects. The engineer will support the development of technical proposals, drive technical and engineering conflicts to resolution, and ensure the engineering needs of assigned product development projects are met.
Responsibilities
- Document designs and analyses with written reports, presentations, and engineering drawings.
- Characterize, analyze, test, and troubleshoot control system hardware and software subsystems.
- Develop and maintain tools to perform robot test data reduction and analysis.
- Perform linearization of nonlinear models, and linear and non-linear controls analysis and algorithm design for stability, robustness, and performance.
- Analyze systems and flight test data to support model improvements and investigate root causes of failures and anomalies.
- Participate in and lead GN&C-related design requirements development and design reviews.
- Develop and maintain reusable software and GN&C design components and integrate them into new designs.
- Work on complex issues requiring in-depth evaluation of variable factors.
- Determine methods and procedures on new assignments and may coordinate activities of other personnel.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in guidance navigation and control (GNC), research & development (R&D), and controls.
- Experience with fixed-wing and rotorcraft systems.
- Bachelor's degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering.
- 8+ years of combined experience in aircraft design, GN&C, flight testing, systems engineering, and program management.
- Hands-on attitude with a broad range of development experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge of engineering disciplines and prior experience leading the development of systems for manned or unmanned air vehicles.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with Ardupilot software is a plus.
- Familiarity with aerospace and UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems).
- Experience with autopilot hardware and software, flight control hardware and software, Part 23 & Part 27 aircraft certification, ground control communications hardware and software, ground control support equipment, air vehicle subsystems integration & test, air vehicle systems communications hardware and software, and high voltage electrical power systems.
- Travel within the continental U.S. is required to support flight test operations (up to 20%).
Work Environment
The role requires working onsite in Huntsville, AL, primarily in an R&D environment with a focus on UAS.
