Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated Specimen Processor to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for processing and storing specimens according to established procedures. You will demonstrate techniques using centrifuges and pipettes, fully understand physicians' orders, and ensure accuracy in matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Your duties will also include labeling, splitting, and freezing specimens as required by test orders, packaging specimens for transport, and maintaining specimen integrity according to protocol.
Responsibilities
- Experience in specimen processing, including centrifuging specimens and recording maintenance data.
- Decontaminate and update patient information.
- Process and store specimens, such as urine or fecal, according to established procedures.
- Demonstrate techniques using centrifuges and pipettes.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
- Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport and store them at the required temperature.
- Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes and label them accurately.
- Follow different procedures as outlined by specific protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attend annual department trainings.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Essential Skills
- Specimen processing experience.
- Proficiency in laboratory data entry.
- Ability to troubleshoot and train.
- Experience in accessioning.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum of 6 months' work experience processing samples in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma or GED.
Work Environment
This position is based in an IOP, working alongside one or more phlebotomists. Your primary role will be processing specimens. This is a temporary position to cover an employee leave and will not transition to permanent. Responsibilities include entering doctor's orders into the computer system, verifying insurance, taking copays or payments, and preparing blood specimens for courier pick-up. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.
