Field Archaeologist – Southern California
An environmental consulting firm is seeking qualified Field Archaeologists for various projects throughout California. This is a full-time, project-based position based out of the Irvine area, with travel required to project sites across the state. The role involves fieldwork in diverse and often challenging environments, supporting cultural resource surveys, monitoring, and documentation.
💵 Pay Range: $28– $40/hour (based on experience and qualifications)
About the Role
We are looking for professionals with hands-on archaeological field experience who are familiar with the practical requirements of survey, evaluation, and monitoring projects. Familiarity with CEQA and NEPA applications is preferred.
You’ll be part of a multidisciplinary team of scientists, planners, and technical specialists working on environmental impact assessments, urban planning, and biological resource projects across California’s unique regulatory landscape.
Responsibilities
- Assist senior archaeologists with field surveys, testing, monitoring, and lab studies.
- Prepare site forms, field notes, and contribute to cultural resource reports.
- Work closely with cultural resources staff, clients, and Native American representatives.
- Conduct fieldwork in remote and rugged terrain, often hiking 10–12 miles/day while carrying up to 25 lbs.
- Collect GPS data using Trimble or Garmin devices.
- Participate in extended field rotations (typically 10 days at a time).
- Apply knowledge of California’s prehistoric and historical cultural resources.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field.
- Minimum 2 years of professional field experience (Master’s degree may substitute for 1 year).
- Ability to work independently and make field decisions.
- Valid driver’s license, personal transportation, and ability to pass a drug test.
- Preferred: Experience in the Great Basin, Mojave, and California deserts.
- Preferred: Cross-training in paleontology and GIS familiarity.
