Job Title: Senior Mechanical Engineer
Job Description
An innovative medical device company is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to support the development of a novel pulmonary neuromodulation system for the treatment of asthma. You will work in an active design, prototyping, and testing environment, owning key mechanical components or subsystems end-to-end. This role suits a hands-on, well-rounded engineer who thrives in a startup setting, works independently with minimal oversight, and enjoys taking products from concept through prototype, testing, and iteration in close collaboration with cross-functional teams.
Responsibilities
- Own the mechanical design of one or more components or subsystems within a larger medical device system.
- Perform 3D CAD design and create detailed mechanical drawings using SolidWorks on a daily basis.
- Translate system and design requirements into robust, manufacturable mechanical solutions.
- Support and perform prototyping activities, including building, assembling, and refining mechanical components.
- Conduct hands-on testing and design verification in an R&D lab environment.
- Design and support electromechanical test fixtures, including overall mechanical fixture layout and integration.
- Define and implement connector and pin alignment solutions to interface with electronic boards.
- Support validation and early test efforts by ensuring fixtures and mechanical setups meet testing needs.
- Manage multiple design priorities simultaneously within a single system development program.
- Plan and execute self-directed tasks on 2–4 week timelines, including prioritization and status tracking.
- Participate actively in design reviews, design sessions, and iterative development cycles, providing clear technical input.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with R&D, electrical, and other engineering disciplines to integrate mechanical and electrical interfaces.
- Contribute to feasibility studies, new product development, and product design activities for Class II and Class III medical devices.
- Apply strong mechanical drafting practices, including GD&T, detailed drawings, and revision control.
- Support the development of electro-mechanical systems, focusing on the mechanical aspects of electrical assemblies (excluding PCB design).
Essential Skills
- 5–10 years of mechanical engineering experience.
- Strong proficiency in SolidWorks, using it 3–4+ days per week for 3D CAD design and detailed drawings.
- Demonstrated experience taking products or components from concept through prototype, testing, and iterative refinement.
- expereince in medical device development, specifically Class II or Class III devices.
- Experience working in a hands-on R&D lab environment.
- Strong mechanical drafting skills, including GD&T, detailed drawings, and revision management.
- Ability to work independently in a small, fast-moving team with minimal hand-holding.
- Comfort managing and juggling multiple components or products simultaneously.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
- Experience in mechanical design and development for medical devices, including feasibility studies, new product development, and product design.
- Experience with electro-mechanical systems and mechanical engineering principles applied to medical device development.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in R&D engineering, prototype design, and design development for medical devices.
- Experience designing or supporting mechanical test fixtures for validation and early testing.
- Exposure to electromechanical design focused on the mechanical side of electrical assemblies (not PCB design).
- Familiarity working with both mechanical and electrical interfaces in integrated systems.
- Experience with FDA-regulated medical device development and related quality expectations.
- Familiarity with ISO standards relevant to medical devices.
- Startup or early-stage company experience, with comfort operating in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
- Experience with Class II and Class III medical devices, including implantable devices (nice to have, not required).
Work Environment
You will work primarily on-site in an R&D lab environment, focusing on an innovative pulmonary neuromodulation system for asthma treatment that is currently in concept prototyping and active development. The setting is a dynamic, early-stage, startup-style organization that has recently secured significant funding to build out the team and advance the system through regulatory milestones. You will use SolidWorks and standard lab tools daily to design, prototype, and test mechanical and electromechanical components, collaborating closely with other engineers in a hands-on, hardware-focused space. The culture emphasizes ownership, rapid iteration, cross-functional collaboration, and the opportunity to contribute directly to a first-of-its-kind medical device system.
