Marine Mechanic - Career Opportunity - San Diego, CA

Job Description

  • This role is designed to provide critical support to the U.S. Navy by conducting recurring assessments and repairs on various shipboard diesel systems and components.

Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering technical support for diesel components and systems such as diesel generators, engine couplings, clutches, lubricating oil systems, and combustion air systems.
  • Perform routine inspections, ready-to-start inspections, post-repair inspections, and formal periodic assessments (FPAs) on diesel engines.
  • Complete technical assessments and provide repair recommendations in report format for review and issuance.
  • Conduct ship visits to offer technical guidance for repairs, troubleshooting, or testing as needed.
  • Deliver on-the-job training for Ships Force Maintenance personnel, focusing on adjustments, repairs, troubleshooting techniques, and safety.
  • Communicate and debrief Ships Force personnel regarding findings, completed repairs, and required training.
  • Assist in researching and resolving departures from specification (DFS).
  • Overhaul main propulsion machinery and associated equipment/components.
  • Assist with the overhaul of auxiliary systems including condensers, compressors, pumps, and more.
  • Maintain engine performance through routine inspections and repairs, including replacing parts like fuel injectors and spark plugs.
  • Diagnose engine failures using diagnostic tools and perform necessary repairs.
  • Install, repair, and maintain engines and components such as cylinder heads, crankshafts, and turbochargers.
  • Inspect and repair hydraulic and pneumatic systems related to steering, braking, and cooling.
  • Diagnose and repair oil, fuel, and exhaust system issues.
  • Perform preventive maintenance tasks such as fluid replacement and fuel injector cleaning.
  • Repair mechanical problems related to boat and outboard motors.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical systems such as starting circuits and ignition systems.
  • Install and repair pumps, compressors, and other accessories powered by diesel engines.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of shipyard experience specializing in diesel systems.
  • Proficiency with precision measurement tools.
  • Basic tool ownership and familiarity with reading blueprints and schematics.
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience with equipment removal from ships.
  • Competency in rigging, tagging, securing, and strapping equipment on Navy ships.
  • Experience with man lifts, rigs, and hoists.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in performing diesel generator replacements.
  • Familiarity with shipyard work environments.

Work Environment

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of National City, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $30.00/hr.
