This mid-level Water/Wastewater Engineer role focuses on leading and supporting the planning, design, construction, and commissioning of water and wastewater treatment projects of varying sizes. You will contribute directly to projects that protect public health, safeguard the environment, and strengthen community resilience, while working in a delivery-driven consulting environment with strong opportunities for technical growth and professional development.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the technical lead on the planning, design, construction, and commissioning of small, medium, and large water and wastewater treatment projects.
- Manage small to medium-sized projects, assuming full project management responsibilities including scope, schedule, budget, and quality oversight.
- Participate in field activities such as site visits, overseeing field work, and supporting pilot testing to inform design and construction decisions.
- Provide on-the-job training, guidance, and mentoring to project staff and entry- to mid-level engineers to support their technical and professional growth.
- Maintain a culture of clear, timely, and effective communication among project teams, clients, partners, and other stakeholders.
- Perform engineering services during construction, including reviewing contractor submittals for conformance with contract plans and specifications and evaluating requests for information.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing clients through responsive service and high-quality project delivery.
- Partner with local business development teams to identify new project opportunities and support business development activities.
- Assist with proposal preparation, including development of project scopes, work plans, and level-of-effort and fee estimates.
- Participate in client and project interviews and presentations as part of pursuit and proposal efforts.
- Coordinate the work of other engineering disciplines, designers, modelers, technicians, and other team members who support specific assignments.
- Apply critical thinking, analysis, and innovative techniques to develop options and recommendations that solve complex technical problems in water and wastewater infrastructure.
- Support adherence to project budgets, schedules, contractual obligations, and quality standards, particularly on higher-level or more complex engineering assignments.
- 5–12 years of experience as a mid-level engineer, including delivering and managing water and/or wastewater treatment projects.
- Degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering, or a related engineering field.
- Demonstrated experience delivering and managing water/wastewater treatment projects with partial responsibility for budget, schedule, contractual obligations, and quality standards.
- Proven ability to deliver high-quality engineering services within established budget and schedule constraints.
- Strong critical thinking and analytical skills, with the ability to develop innovative options and recommendations to solve technical problems.
- Proficiency in MS Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Experience with systems engineering concepts related to water systems and infrastructure.
- Knowledge of water and wastewater treatment processes, water resources, pipelines, and related civil engineering infrastructure.
- Familiarity with quality assurance procedures in engineering design and construction.
- Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams, including other engineering disciplines, designers, modelers, and technicians.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to support effective collaboration with project teams, clients, and stakeholders.
- EIT certification, successful completion of the FE exam, or professional registration as an engineer (or eligibility for such registration), particularly for higher-level engineering responsibilities.
- Experience performing engineering services during construction, including reviewing contractor submittals and responding to requests for information.
- Background in water and wastewater infrastructure projects that support public health, environmental protection, and community resilience.
- Ability to apply innovative techniques and structured analysis to complex water and wastewater challenges.
- Interest in business development activities, including proposal preparation, scope and fee development, and participation in client interviews.
- Motivation to grow technically and assume increasing responsibility on complex and mission-critical projects.
- Comfort working in an environment with high expectations for quality, accountability, and timely delivery.
This role operates within a delivery-driven consulting environment focused exclusively on water and wastewater projects. Workloads can become heavy during peak design and construction phases, particularly on large or complex programs, and you should be comfortable managing competing priorities and occasional deadline pressure. The culture emphasizes strong learning opportunities, high expectations for quality and accountability, and meaningful work that has visible, long-term impact on communities. This environment suits engineers who want to grow technically, prefer challenging work over a slow pace, and take pride in delivering mission-critical infrastructure that supports public health and environmental protection.
