Job Description
Under moderate supervision and with routine accuracy checks, the Senior Project Accountant reviews contractual agreements and generates customer invoices for various contract types, including Cost Reimbursable, Fixed Fee, Time & Materials (T&M), and Progress Payments within both government (Aerospace/Defense) and commercial sectors. The role involves posting journal entries related to revenue, billed and unbilled receivables, and assisting with month-end financial close activities. The accountant ensures revenue recognition in accordance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and internal company policies, performs reconciliations for projects and general ledger accounts, and prepares and supports the submission of final and expedited close-out invoices for government contracts.
Responsibilities
- Review contractual agreements and generate customer invoices for various contract types.
- Post journal entries related to revenue, billed and unbilled receivables.
- Assist with month-end financial close activities.
- Ensure revenue recognition in accordance with U.S. GAAP and internal policies.
- Perform reconciliations for projects and general ledger accounts.
- Prepare and support submission of final and expedited close-out invoices for government contracts.
- Assist with both government and internal financial audits.
- Participate in the analysis and interpretation of financial and accounting data.
- Gather and compile complex data sets to produce detailed reports.
- Maintain strong working relationships with Contracts and Finance teams.
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, including FASB, CAS, FAR, and company-specific practices.
- Identify and suggest enhancements to current accounting processes and procedures.
- Contribute to the accuracy and integrity of financial records, transactions, and reporting.
- Maintain up-to-date and accurate accounting documentation and files.
- Take on special assignments as needed.
Essential Skills
- Experience in billing for Cost Reimbursable, Fixed Fee, Time & Materials (T&M), and Progress Payment contracts within a government contracting environment.
- Experience with recording journal entries and supporting month-end financial close activities.
- Solid understanding of U.S. GAAP, Cost Accounting Standards (CAS), and the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR).
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting, finance, or a closely related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Typically eight or more years of progressive accounting experience with a bachelor’s degree, or six or more years with a master’s degree.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, with advanced Excel skills strongly preferred.
- Strong analytical skills and effective communication abilities, both written and verbal.
- Capable of identifying issues, interpreting financial data, and developing solutions.
- Able to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines.
- Customer-focused mindset.
- Comfortable working independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Familiarity with SAP is highly desirable.
- Flexibility to work extended hours when needed.
