Job Description

We are seeking a skilled MOHS Technician to join our dynamic team. This role involves assisting with MOHS procedures, primarily focusing on head and neck cases, and maintaining lab operations during non-surgery weeks. The technician will perform complex histological procedures including grossing, staining, drying, and freezing samples to preserve and test them. A vital part of this role is to prepare tissue specimens for both routine and special procedures to obtain a patient diagnosis.

***Shift: This is a part-time evening shift position. Up to 15 hours a week, but not guaranteed. Monday-Thursday 4:00pm-9:00pm on surgery days, and 5:00-9:0pm on cleaning/maintenance days.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with MOHS procedures, focusing primarily on head and neck cases.
  • Maintain lab operations during non-surgery weeks, including cleaning and checking logs and reagents.
  • Support inspection readiness.
  • Perform complex histological procedures using techniques such as grossing, staining, drying, and freezing.
  • Prepare tissue specimens for routine and special procedures to obtain a patient diagnosis.
  • Accession and gross tissue specimens.
  • Process specimens by embedding, cutting, staining, coverslipping, and filing.
  • Prepare slides of specimens using specified stains for enhanced visibility under a microscope.
  • Trim tissue specimens into blocks and fix them in fixing solutions or formalin.
  • Examine slides under a microscope to detect abnormalities and report any deviations from the norm.
  • Record and analyze data for accuracy and consistency.
  • Prepare media, chemicals, reagents, and solutions.
  • Preserve and store samples according to established policies and procedures.
  • Maintain, clean, and repair equipment and instruments as per established procedures and manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Establish and monitor quality control programs, performing required quality control, maintenance, and quality assurance.

Essential Skills

  • Experience with MOHS procedures, preferably at least 1 year.
  • Expertise in histology, pathology, grossing, staining, drying, and freezing samples.
  • Familiarity with CLIA standards.
  • HT/L ASCP certification or completion of Histology Technician training course and eligibility to sit for the exam.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor's Degree in a science-related field is preferred.
  • MOHS certification is a plus.

Work Environment

You will be working in a fast-paced histology/pathology lab, surrounded by like-minded professionals. The role involves working closely with one physician, completing at least 5-15 MOHS surgeries a night during PM shifts. The lab is quick-moving, with an expectation to prepare slides on ice promptly to prevent expiration. The work schedule includes Monday to Thursday shifts, with varying hours based on surgery or cleaning weeks. Flexibility to work at different locations is required, and there is no guaranteed 'home base'.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of San Diego, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $35.00/hr.
