Composite Technician I - Poway, CA - Career Opportunity

Job Description

  • As a Composite Technician I, you will work under supervision to fabricate, assemble, and repair advanced composite structures using materials such as carbon fiber, Kevlar, and fiberglass. You will interpret blueprints, prepare molds, and perform material lay-up, curing, and finishing processes. Your work will involve trimming, drilling, bonding, and fastening parts to meet precise engineering specifications. Ensuring quality through detailed inspections and collaborating with other teams to resolve assembly challenges is vital. You will maintain a safe and organized work environment, adhering to safety procedures and documentation requirements. This position requires strong attention to detail, manual dexterity, and experience with composite materials or aerospace components.

Responsibilities

  • Precisely align and fit composite parts and subassemblies according to engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Apply structural adhesives, sealants, and bonding agents to join composite components using proper techniques.
  • Install fasteners such as rivets, bolts, and screws using hand and power tools, verifying torque values and fastener placement.
  • Assemble complex structures by integrating hardware and mating composite parts with metallic or non-metallic elements.
  • Prepare bonding surfaces by sanding, cleaning, and treating to ensure optimal adhesion and structural integrity.
  • Set up and use assembly jigs, fixtures, and templates to maintain dimensional accuracy and repeatability.
  • Perform basic functional checks and preliminary inspections to verify assembly quality before final inspection.
  • Record assembly steps, process parameters, and any deviations from standard procedures.
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, and fabrication teams to resolve assembly challenges and improve processes.
  • Assist in the preparation of molds and forms.
  • Mark and cut materials following templates, guides, or specific dimensions.
  • Route, drill, trim, and sand to blueprint dimensions and tolerances.
  • Maintain records as required.
  • Support quality process by maintaining work area in an orderly condition.
  • Work in a safe manner according to established operating procedures and practices.

Essential Skills

  • Experience with composites, manufacturing, layup, lamination, blueprints, vacuum bagging, aerospace, autoclave, fabrication, prepreg, carbon fiber.
  • Strong work ethic with stability.
  • Familiarity with assembly, fabrication, or mechanics.
  • Ability to verbally communicate, read, and comprehend written and verbal instructions, detailed blueprints, and authorized drawings.
  • Capability of performing simple mathematical calculations.
  • Proficiency with hand tools such as rollers, paper cutters, scissors, x-acto knives, electric heat guns, and fixtures such as molds and mandrels.
  • Ability to use measuring instruments such as scales, protractors, and calipers.
  • May require respirator certification.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Ability to work in a loud environment.
  • Willingness to work extended hours as required.
  • Ability to lift assemblies weighing up to 50 lbs.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of San Diego, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $21.64 - $22.64/hr.
