MACHINE OPERATORS
2nd Shift- $20/hr.
Job Description
The Extrusion Machine Operator sets up, operates, and monitors extrusion equipment used to apply hot compounds over cable, ensuring products meet precise diameter, finish, and quality specifications. This role involves configuring machine parameters, performing changeovers and minor maintenance, and overseeing multiple pieces of equipment to maintain safe, efficient, and consistent production.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and set up extrusion machines according to work instructions, including selecting and installing the correct tooling and loading the hopper with the appropriate compound.
- Configure and adjust temperature settings, line speed, and other critical parameters to achieve the specified product diameter, finish, and tolerances.
- Operate and monitor multiple pieces of extrusion-related equipment during full production to ensure safe, efficient, and consistent output.
- Calculate, verify, and document product diameter and tolerances using measurement tools such as calipers, following established work instructions.
- Follow detailed work instructions and standard work procedures to maintain consistent product quality and meet production targets.
- Use production and quality data to make informed adjustments to equipment and processes in order to maintain operational excellence targets.
- Clean the machine barrel, head, and tooling prior to starting new jobs and when changing compounds to prevent contamination and defects.
- Perform routine minor maintenance on extrusion equipment and promptly escalate mechanical or process issues to minimize downtime.
- Adhere to all safety protocols, required personal protective equipment (PPE), and company policies at all times while operating machinery.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in alignment with 5S principles, including regular housekeeping and proper tool storage.
- Identify and suggest improvements to processes, workstations, and workflows to increase efficiency, improve quality, and reduce waste.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams such as maintenance, quality, and production to resolve issues and support customer-focused outcomes.
- Take ownership of assigned tasks and actively contribute to achieving production, quality, and safety goals.
Essential Skills
- Experience operating manual industrial machinery in a manufacturing or production environment.
- Ability to set up, operate, and perform basic troubleshooting on extrusion or similar industrial equipment.
- Comfort performing laborious work, including heavy lifting and prolonged standing in an industrial setting.
- Understanding of basic mathematics and measurements to calculate and verify product dimensions and tolerances.
- Ability to read, interpret, and follow detailed work instructions and standard operating procedures.
- Proficiency using measurement tools such as calipers and other inspection equipment to verify product quality.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy when monitoring machine settings and recording measurements.
- Commitment to following safety protocols, PPE requirements, and company policies while operating machinery.
- Ability to work effectively on a consistent schedule and adapt to training on different shifts as needed.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Previous experience in extrusion or cable manufacturing is beneficial.
- Familiarity with 5S or similar workplace organization practices is an advantage.
- Basic mechanical aptitude to recognize and report equipment issues promptly.
- Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and communicate clearly about production or quality concerns.
- Willingness to learn new processes, equipment, and continuous improvement practices.

Work Environment
This role is based in an industrial manufacturing environment operating on the second shift, typically from 2:15 p.m. to 10:45 p.m., Monday through Friday, with optional overtime opportunities on weekends. New hires train on a swing shift from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. for approximately one to two weeks before transitioning to their regular schedule. The facility is not temperature controlled, so the work area can be hot or cold depending on the weather. The environment involves working around industrial machinery, using measurement and inspection tools, and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment, including steel toe shoes and, when required, safety glasses. The role requires comfort with physical work, heavy lifting, and maintaining a clean and organized work area in a busy production setting.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of San Marcos, CA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $21.00/hr.
