Job Title: Design Technician
We’re looking for a motivated Design Technician who’s ready to jump into the world of utility design and make a real, visible impact. In this role, you’ll bring utility projects to life—designing, drafting, and coordinating work that keeps power flowing safely and efficiently.
If you enjoy problem‑solving, working with technical drawings, and balancing design work with hands‑on field experience, this is an excellent entry point into a growing utility design career.
Responsibilities
You’ll work on a variety of utility projects from concept through permitting, collaborating across teams and seeing your designs move from screen to construction.
- Create detailed utility designs and layouts using AutoCAD
- Design overhead and underground electric distribution projects
- Perform engineering calculations, validate easements, and ensure constructability
- Develop complete permit packages and coordinate approvals
- Prepare design and construction cost estimates
- Review GIS Smallworld data to identify conflicts and updates
- Conduct field surveys, inspections, and line testing
- Interpret and process electronic pole diagrams
- Document power distribution facilities and related infrastructure
- Coordinate with engineering, construction, and permitting teams to meet schedules
- Apply safety standards, company design guidelines, and regulatory requirements in every project
- Manage multiple projects while delivering high‑quality results and excellent customer support
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in AutoCAD
- Strong math and measurement skills (assessment required)
- Interest in or exposure to utility design, drafting, engineering, or field work
- Ability to learn technical standards and follow detailed processes
Preferred / Nice‑to‑Have
- Experience with GIS Smallworld
- Construction or field experience
- Associate’s degree in Design, Drafting, Engineering, or a related field
- Valid driver’s license and ability to use a personal vehicle for field work
Work Environment
- Approximately 20% fieldwork, increasing to up to 45% depending on project needs
- Currently remote, with potential transition to an office environment next year
- Field work may include job sites, inspections, surveys, and coordination with crews
Why You’ll Love This Role
- Hands‑on learning in the utility industry with real‑world projects
- A mix of design, fieldwork, and collaboration—no two days are the same
- Opportunities to grow technical skills in AutoCAD, GIS, utilities, and permitting
- Exposure to both overhead and underground electric systems
- A role designed for career builders looking to establish long‑term growth in engineering and utility design
