Field Service Technician – Electrical Substation & Transformer Assembly

Overview:

We are seeking experienced Field Service Technicians to join our team supporting the installation, assembly, testing, and maintenance of large‑scale electrical substation transformers and components. This role involves extensive hands‑on mechanical work, travel to job sites, and working as part of a highly skilled field operations team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Travel to electrical substation construction sites as part of a field service crew.
  • Assist with the arrival and offloading of transformers and substation components from trucks using cranes, forklifts, rigging equipment, and other heavy machinery.
  • Stage components across the job site and prepare mechanical assemblies for installation.
  • Perform craning and lifting operations to set large components onto concrete pads.
  • Assemble transformers and substation components using mechanical tools including wrenches, torque tools, and various hand tools.
  • Bolt and secure large mechanical assemblies and ensure proper alignment and fit.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and mechanical installation drawings.
  • Perform functional testing to verify correct assembly.
  • Level II & Level III Technicians:
    • Fill transformers with oil
    • Perform vacuum pumping and processing
    • Conduct acceptance testing
  • Work alongside electrical utilities during final energization of the substation.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with experience assembling large mechanical components (vehicles, heavy machinery, industrial equipment, etc.).
  • Ability to work with basic and advanced hand tools.
  • Experience with mechanical installation, assembly, field service, or equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to understand and interpret schematics and blueprints.
  • Comfort working outdoors, in field environments, and around heavy equipment.

Preferred Experience

  • Background in transformer installation, substation construction, or utility‑scale mechanical assembly.
  • Field service experience in an industrial or electrical environment.
  • Familiarity with cranes, rigging, forklifts, and large mechanical equipment.

  • Turnkey installation
  • Assembly, vacuum processing, and oil filling under vacuum
  • Acceptance testing
  • Two‑winding & three‑winding transformers, auto transformers, phase shifters
  • Shunt reactors and VRC/PAC combinations
  • Project management support
  • Safety surveys

Transformer Testing Services

  • Failure analysis
  • Field acceptance testing
  • Doble® (M4K & SFRA)
  • TTR, insulation resistance
  • Winding resistance & core de‑magnetization
  • BCT testing (ratio, polarity, saturation)
  • Functional testing of ancillary devices
Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Denver, CO.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $28.00/hr.
