Job Title: Pharmacy Technician
Job Description
Assist the Pharmacist in preparing and distributing medications to patients. Perform designated technical functions to facilitate pharmacy operations.
Responsibilities
- Prepare oral, topical, and all parenteral medications for dispensing to patients, including selection, labeling, and packaging of appropriate pharmaceuticals using appropriate IV equipment, and filling of medication carts under the supervision of a licensed Pharmacist.
- Enter physician orders into the hospital computer system to update/edit patient profiles and charges.
- Assist patients, nurses, physicians, and others with medication order requests and pharmacy-related needs.
- Monitor stock inventory levels and medication expiration dates for pharmacy areas and replenish medications as needed.
- Conduct monthly/periodic inspections of patient care/department areas.
- Fill and replace medications in the automated medication dispensing machines and transport to appropriate nursing units.
- Prepare IV admixtures using aseptic techniques, including STATS, parenteral nutrition bags, and cytotoxic agents.
- Deliver and retrieve medications, including narcotics, and pharmacy supplies to/from patient care and satellite pharmacy areas.
- Compound products in bulk, or per individual order, and prepare private stock orders and individual unit-of-use packaging, when not otherwise available.
- Complete and maintain controlled substance inventory log/records.
- Effectively perform all pharmacy technician duties in all pharmacy locations including the OR pharmacy.
- Assist the lead Pharmacy Technician in orienting new Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Technician students.
- Maintain clean and orderly workstations.
Essential Skills
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification
- Experience in compounding and fulfillment
- Experience with Pyxis or similar automated medication dispensing systems
- Pharmacy licensed experience
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Hospital experience is preferred but not required
- Pharmacy Technician certificate
- High school degree or GED diploma is required
- Diploma from an approved pharmacy technician training program may be acceptable
- DC Department of Health (DOH) registration is required
- Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), or equivalent national certification
Work Environment
This position is in a hospital setting with rotating shifts, including 7:30 am - 3:30 pm and 3:30 pm - 11:30 pm, Monday to Friday. The work environment is dynamic, requiring attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining a clean and organized workspace.
