Job Description
We are seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Pharmacy Technician to join our hospital team with a primary focus on medication deliveries. This role is essential in ensuring timely and accurate delivery of medications and supplies to various departments within the hospital, supporting patient care and pharmacy operations.
Responsibilities
- Efficiently deliver medications, supplies, and pharmaceutical products to designated hospital units and departments.
- Maintain accurate delivery logs and ensure proper documentation of all transactions.
- Verify patient and unit information to ensure correct delivery.
- Communicate effectively with nursing staff and other healthcare professionals regarding deliveries.
- Follow all hospital protocols and safety procedures, including infection control and HIPAA compliance.
- Assist with inventory management related to delivery items.
- Report any discrepancies, delays, or issues to the pharmacy team promptly.
- Perform designated technical functions to facilitate pharmacy operations.
- Under the supervision of the licensed Pharmacist, prepare oral, topical, and all parenteral medications for dispensing to patients, including the selection, labeling, and packaging of appropriate pharmaceuticals using appropriate IV equipment, and filling of medication carts.
- Monitor stock inventory levels and medication expiration dates for pharmacy areas and replenish medications as needed.
- Conduct monthly/periodic inspections of patient care/department areas.
- Complete and maintain controlled substance inventory log/records.
- Maintain clean and orderly workstations.
Essential Skills
- Pharmacy technician certification
- Compounding skills
- Fulfillment experience
- Experience with Pyxis systems
- DC Pharmacy license required
- 1-2 years of Retail, Oncology, or Hospital experience
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- High school degree or GED diploma required
- DC Department of Health (DOH) registration required
- Hospital experience preferred but not required
Work Environment
This position is located in a hospital setting with rotating shifts from 7:30am to 3:30pm and 3:30pm to 11:30pm, Monday to Friday, with every other weekend required. The pharmacy department operates at an extremely fast-paced environment, filling one prescription per minute within 24 hours. Technicians handle a minimum of 2,000 dosages in one shift and are constantly on their feet for eight hours with two 15-minute breaks and one 30-minute lunch. The hospital operates 24/7, requiring candidates to rotate holidays and weekends and be present during inclement weather. In snowstorms, the hospital compensates for Uber rides, round trip. Candidates are expected to pay for parking, but the hospital provides an additional 50 cents per hour to help with reimbursement.
