Phlebotomist II


Job Description

The main function of a Phlebotomist II is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. The role involves supporting the collection and processing of blood and other specimens while ensuring high standards of patient care and compliance with regulations.


Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data.
  • Decontaminate work areas and update patient information.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
  • Explain the venipuncture and other specimen collection processes in a clear and courteous manner.
  • Demonstrate techniques using straight and/or butterfly needles.
  • Understand and follow all physicians' orders.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
  • Ensure correct test requisitions or computer labels against scripts.
  • Package specimens for transport and store samples according to required temperature.
  • Place samples in appropriate collection containers and accurately label them.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department trainings.
  • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Essential Skills

  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment.
  • Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 2-4 years of experience in phlebotomy.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 2+ years of phlebotomy experience with verifiable experience drawing on all age groups.

Work Environment

The work schedule is Monday to Friday, from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. The role is situated in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting, requiring attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols.
