The Substation Engineer plans, designs, and executes key aspects of large-scale energy storage projects, with a strong focus on substation and related electrical systems. This role combines deep technical engineering expertise with practical project management capabilities to deliver safe, efficient, and reliable energy storage solutions. The engineer provides engineering oversight, defines project scope, and consults across cross-functional teams to help bring best-in-class battery energy storage systems to market.
Responsibilities
- Plan, design, and engineer major components and systems for large-scale energy storage projects, with emphasis on substation and associated electrical infrastructure.
- Support the design phase by developing and reviewing engineering documents, drawings, and specifications for energy storage and substation systems.
- Recognize inconsistencies and errors in engineering drawings and studies, take corrective action, and drive continuous improvements in design quality and efficiency.
- Identify and resolve technical issues discovered during engineering studies and propose robust, forward-looking solutions.
- Prepare clear and detailed technical scopes of work for contracts and procurement packages related to major equipment and services.
- Support projects from inception through completion by working closely with project managers and other stakeholders to align engineering deliverables with project goals, schedules, and budgets.
- Influence and guide project teams on engineering tasks, providing technical direction and recommendations throughout the project lifecycle.
- Monitor project progress on engineering activities, stay informed on technical issues, and communicate updates and risks to relevant stakeholders.
- Manage and track project milestones related to engineering deliverables, proactively identifying and addressing technical and schedule risks.
- Collaborate with suppliers and vendors to integrate major equipment, ensuring compatibility with project requirements and overall system design.
- Work with diverse, cross-functional teams to solve complex technical problems, identify improvement opportunities, and integrate systems and controls effectively.
- Interpret and apply specifications for major equipment purchasing, ensure clear communication of technical requirements, and propose practical solutions to specification gaps or conflicts.
- Understand permitting requirements for energy storage and substation projects, propose solutions to technical aspects of legal and regulatory challenges, and recommend site design improvements to support compliance.
- Perform additional engineering and project-related duties as assigned to support successful project execution.
- Travel up to approximately 25% of the time for project-specific duties, including site visits, supplier meetings, and in-office collaboration.
Essential Skills
- 3+ years of experience in Solar/PV engineering and/or construction, with exposure to utility-scale or large commercial projects.
- Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following areas: power electronics, battery storage system design, substation design, or generation tie design.
- Strong understanding of energy storage technologies, including battery chemistries, power conversion units, and DC/DC converters.
- Familiarity with lithium-ion battery storage safety standards, including UL1973, UL9540, NFPA 855, NFPA 70E, NEC, and applicable IFC/IBC sections.
- Ability to independently handle specialized technical tasks and make sound engineering judgments.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Solid project management awareness, including the ability to support scheduling, milestone tracking, and risk identification for engineering activities.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working on battery energy storage system (BESS) projects or similar grid-scale energy infrastructure.
- Familiarity with relevant IEC standards for electrical and energy storage systems.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including project management, legal, procurement, and field teams.
- Comfort working with suppliers and vendors to integrate major equipment into overall project designs.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on continuous improvement and design optimization.
- Ability to adapt to evolving project requirements and handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
