Job Title: Substation Designer


Job Description

The Substation Engineering Technician functions in an engineering technician capacity. Under general direction, you will modify or create deliverables and perform assignments of a design nature by applying basic engineering principles and established design practices to develop complex design concepts. You will provide technical guidance and may provide direction to other engineering professionals.


Responsibilities

  • Proactively provide guidance and direction by utilizing knowledge of standards, systems, document control, departmental guides, applicable codes, and company policies and procedures.
  • Review project requirements to accurately determine the correct format and contents of the required deliverables.
  • Promote quality within projects and review design inputs to ensure consistency and compliance with specific codes and standards.
  • Apply basic engineering principles and established design practices in developing moderately complex design concepts and deliverables.
  • Handle difficult technical assignments and provide technical guidance to other professionals.
  • Perform design calculations, detailed material quantities and estimates, and records using advanced applications like modeling and design software.
  • Coordinate with other design group personnel to review and exchange project information necessary for design development.
  • Assist with identification of key client interests and drivers, and communicate these to project team members.
  • Assist discipline or department management in developing and communicating appropriate design standards and process improvement activities.
  • Provide guidance, mentoring, and feedback to lesser experienced engineering technicians.

  • Advanced experience with AutoDesk Inventor (SDS)
  • Advanced experience with physical or P&C substation design (AIS and/or GIS)

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in Drafting or an Engineering Design Related Technology preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering Design Related Technology preferred
  • Typically, a minimum of 8 years related work experience
  • Intermediate knowledge of engineering calculations and design principles
  • Advanced knowledge of engineering standards, systems, and document control
  • Basic knowledge of construction & constructability practices & principles
  • Basic knowledge of procurement & contract administration

Work Environment

The work environment involves using various electronic applications and programs required for performing assignments, including CADD, other electronic applications, and document storage systems. It requires advanced experience with AutoDesk Inventor (SDS) and physical substation design (AIS and/or GIS). The role may require collaboration with various teams and participation in field activities. The dress code and facility conditions are conducive to a professional engineering setting.
