CNC Machine Operator
Job Summary
We are seeking a technically skilled CNC Machine Operator to support precision manufacturing operations in a high‑volume production environment. This role involves operating CNC laser systems and related machining equipment, performing tooling setups, interpreting engineering drawings, and ensuring dimensional accuracy through precise measurement and inspection techniques. Candidates should be mechanically inclined, detail‑oriented, and comfortable working around advanced fabrication machinery.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate CNC laser cutting systems and monitor machine parameters to maintain cut quality and throughput
- Perform tooling and fixture setups, including offsets, calibration, and material alignment
- Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and work instructions
- Operate CNC punching machines, press brakes, milling machines, and other fabrication equipment
- Use precision measurement tools (tape measure, calipers, gauges) to verify part dimensions
- Perform basic mechanical troubleshooting and assist with minor machine repairs
- Safely operate forklifts for material movement and staging
- Maintain accurate production documentation and follow established workflow procedures
- Work safely around moving mechanical components and follow all safety protocols
Required Skills & Abilities
- Experience with CNC, CNC laser, or general machine operation
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide for dimensional calculations
- Ability to read and interpret a tape measure accurately
- Physical ability to:
- Stand for up to 10 hours per shift
- Lift 10–25 lbs for over 2/3 of the day
- Lift 50 lbs for approximately 2/3 of the day
Preferred Skills
- Fabrication experience (cutting, forming, welding)
- Mechanical repair or maintenance experience
- Experience with laser cutting systems or CNC programming fundamentals
- Familiarity with industrial tooling, fixturing, and machine setup
Additional Qualifications
- Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn advanced machining processes
- Interest in developing skills with hand tools, power tools, welding, and fabrication
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast‑paced, high‑production environment

Work Environment
- Manufacturing shop with continuous exposure to moving/mechanical parts
- Team of ~120 production employees, typically working in groups of 2–5
- Required attire: steel‑toe/composite boots, jeans, short or long sleeves (no shorts, tank tops, or cut‑offs)
- Company‑provided PPE: hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection
Schedule
2nd Shift: Monday–Friday
3:15 PM – 1:45 AM (10‑hour days / 50‑hour weeks)
Optional overtime available on Saturdays or by adjusting start/end times
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Ames, IA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $24.00 - $28.00/hr.
