Job Description
The Converting Operator operates production machinery used for flexible packaging, including labels and printed boxes. This role focuses on setting up, running, and monitoring converting equipment, maintaining mounting tools, and ensuring all plates and components are clean, inspected, and ready for each print run. The position requires hands-on mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to quality and safety in a manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
- Operate converting machinery used for flexible packaging, including equipment that prints labels and boxes.
- Set up machines at the start of each run, including loading materials, aligning components, and verifying correct settings.
- Utilize and maintain mounting equipment, ensuring it is correctly set up, functioning properly, and kept clean throughout the shift.
- Handle printing plates used as molds, including installing, removing, and safely storing them after use.
- Clean plates thoroughly before storage and before reuse to ensure optimal print quality and prevent contamination.
- Inspect each plate prior to a print run to confirm it is free of defects, properly prepared, and suitable for production.
- Monitor machine performance during production, making adjustments as needed to maintain consistent quality and efficiency.
- Identify basic mechanical issues and perform minor adjustments or troubleshooting to keep equipment running smoothly.
- Support production line activities as needed, including assisting with assembly or related tasks to maintain workflow.
- Follow all safety procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment and adherence to facility guidelines.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, including regular cleaning of machines, mounting equipment, and surrounding workstations.
- Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors regarding equipment status, quality concerns, and production progress.
- Document or report any issues with machinery, materials, or finished product quality in a timely manner.
Essential Skills
- At least 6 months of machine operation experience in a production or manufacturing environment.
- A minimum of 1 year of experience working within a manufacturing setting or on a production line.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and comfort working with mechanical equipment and tools.
- Experience with assembly or similar hands-on production tasks.
- Ability to learn and follow machine setup, operating, and cleaning procedures accurately.
- Strong attention to detail when inspecting plates, materials, and finished product.
- Commitment to working safely and using required personal protective equipment.
- Capability to work effectively on a 3rd shift schedule as assigned.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Previous press operator experience is a plus and will be considered an asset.
- Experience operating converting, printing, or packaging machinery is beneficial.
- Familiarity with flexible packaging processes, labels, or printed boxes is advantageous.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a small, close-knit team.
- Strong work ethic and reliability, with a focus on productivity and quality.

Work Environment
This role is based in a smaller, family-owned and operated manufacturing facility with a close-knit team and very low turnover; many staff members have been with the company for over five years. The company provides personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection. The dress code requires steel toe boots, jeans or work pants without holes, and a t-shirt. Work is performed on the production floor around converting and related machinery, with an emphasis on safe operation and cleanliness. The facility runs multiple shifts, including a 1st shift (5:00–1:00) and a 2nd shift (1:00–9:00), and this position operates on a 3rd shift schedule as assigned.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Boone, IA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $18.00 - $22.00/hr.
