Position Overview
The Construction Materials Tester is a hands-on, field-based role supporting commercial construction projects by testing concrete and soil to verify quality, safety, and compliance with specifications. This position involves working on active job sites during concrete placements, collecting material samples, and coordinating directly with contractors. With training and experience, you’ll gain the skills to work independently and build a long-term career in construction materials testing.
This role will be heavily focused on concrete testing for large-scale commercial projects, including substations associated with a major data center development.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct field testing for concrete and soil density on active construction sites
- Collect and document concrete and soil samples during pours for footings, foundations, slabs, and parking lots
- Operate testing tools and equipment (up to 75 lbs), including wheelbarrows, measuring devices, and testing gauges
- Travel to multiple job sites and transport samples to the lab or shop
- Communicate clearly and professionally with contractors and job site personnel
- Work independently after training while following safety, testing, and quality standards
Required Skills & Experience
- Experience in construction, general labor, materials testing, or related field work
- Basic knowledge of concrete, soil, asphalt, or construction methods
- Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 75 lbs
- Basic math and computer skills
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
Preferred Qualifications
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Experience in landscaping, lawn care, or geotechnical testing
- Willingness to work flexible hours based on construction schedules

Work Environment & Schedule
- Commercial construction sites throughout Eastern Iowa, including large-scale projects
- Typical schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:30 AM–4:30 PM (start and end times may vary)
- Approximately 50 hours per week during peak construction season
- Attire: jeans, T-shirts or sweatshirts, steel-toe boots (shorts permitted at company discretion based on weather)
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Cedar Rapids, IA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $18.00 - $19.00/hr.
