Job Description
We are seeking a detail-oriented, organized, and adaptable Contract First Responder (Manufacturing Test Technician) to join our manufacturing test team in Decatur. The team supports nine product lines, ensuring robust testing processes for heavy machinery, including large trucks. The First Responder will act as the first line of defense, addressing immediate test-related issues on the factory floor to allow full-time test engineers to focus on new product development and major changes. This role requires strong electrical troubleshooting skills, basic computer proficiency, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
- Respond to radio calls for immediate troubleshooting of test-related issues, primarily electrical, such as cabling issues between computers and machinery, and software delivery via the PSP system.
- Diagnose and repair low-voltage (24V) electrical systems using a meter.
- Build and repair wiring harnesses (5-6 wire setups) based on electrical schematics.
- Perform assigned tasks, such as constructing additional harnesses, when not addressing radio calls.
- Use a personal computer for email, Microsoft Teams, and basic software navigation for communication and documentation.
- Participate in occasional meetings to provide detailed reports on issues or corrections.
Essential Skills
- Strong understanding of low-voltage (24V) electrical systems.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and build/repair wiring harnesses from prints.
- Proficiency in troubleshooting electrical systems using a meter.
- Basic proficiency in navigating software such as PSP system, Word, Excel, and Outlook after training.
- Exceptional attention to detail to avoid errors, such as incorrect wire placement.
- Ability to juggle multiple tasks and track progress effectively using tools like a notepad.
- Willingness to learn daily, including company-specific schematics and hydraulic/mechanical basics.
- Ability to adapt to a dynamic environment with frequent new challenges.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Mechanical, pneumatic, or hydraulic aptitude is preferred and can be taught if electrical skills are strong.
- Experience in mechanical engineering or hands-on mechanical experience is a plus.
- Open to candidates with varied backgrounds, including new graduates with hands-on electrical or mechanical aptitude.
- Candidates from nontraditional backgrounds such as apprenticeships, certifications, or on-the-job training in troubleshooting are welcome.
- No strict years of experience required; emphasis on ability to read schematics, troubleshoot electrical issues, and learn quickly.
Work Environment
This fast-paced, hands-on role involves spending 80-90% of time on the factory floor. Computer work is integrated into floor activities, with occasional desk time for communication. The schedule is full-time, 5 days on-site in Decatur, with rotating weekend coverage approximately every 6-7 weeks. Weekend shifts may involve on-site presence or on-call duties, with opportunities for overtime. New hires may shadow test engineers on weekends for training. The work environment requires a self-starter who can take tasks, ask clarifying questions, and deliver finished products without micromanagement. Strong organizational skills are essential to manage multiple priorities and avoid task oversight. Comfort in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment where tasks must be completed quickly to prevent backlog is crucial.
