Job Description
The Maintenance Apprentice will work in a busy steel distribution center that cuts and ships metal coils to customers. In this role, you will train directly under a senior maintenance technician and learn all aspects of maintaining and repairing facility equipment. You will focus primarily on preventive maintenance while gaining hands-on experience with hydraulics, electrical systems, and general facility repair.
Responsibilities
- Work closely under the guidance of a senior maintenance technician to learn all maintenance procedures within the facility.
- Perform preventive maintenance (PM) on production and facility equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Assist with troubleshooting and repairing hydraulic systems and related components.
- Support electrical maintenance tasks, including work on systems up to 480V under supervision.
- Help replace motors and other mechanical components as needed.
- Use hand and power tools, including grinders, safely and effectively for maintenance and repair tasks.
- Perform general facility repairs to maintain a safe and functional work environment.
- Read and interpret basic blueprints and schematics to assist in troubleshooting and repairs.
- Assist with basic welding tasks if experienced or trained to do so.
- Follow all safety procedures and guidelines while working in an industrial steel distribution environment.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in clean and orderly condition.
- Demonstrate motivation, reliability, and a strong desire to learn and improve technical skills.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Technical school education in industrial maintenance, electrical, mechanical, or a related field.
- Welding experience or training in an industrial setting.
- Experience with wiring and working on 480V electrical systems.
- Prior experience in an industrial, manufacturing, or distribution environment.
- Troubleshooting experience as a maintenance technician or in a similar role.
- Ability to interpret maintenance documentation, blueprints, and schematics.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to take initiative.
Work Environment
The role is based in a steel distribution center where metal coils are cut and shipped to customers. The environment is industrial, can be dirty, and requires physical work, including standing, walking, and handling tools and materials throughout the shift. The position follows a first-shift schedule, typically 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with the need to remain flexible and occasionally work on Saturdays if an emergency arises. You will work around heavy equipment, hydraulic and electrical systems, and will regularly use hand and power tools such as grinders. Safety procedures and appropriate industrial workwear are essential in this setting
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Franklin Park, IL.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr.
