Job Title: R&D Lab Technician
Job Description
This role supports a research and development laboratory by preparing, testing, and adjusting chemical samples to meet precise customer and production specifications. The position involves hands-on work with state-of-the-art equipment, close collaboration with a technical team, and active participation in color matching, formulation, and quality verification activities in a fast-paced lab environment.
Responsibilities
- Prepare chemical samples that meet specific customer requirements using standard formulations and established procedures.
- Formulate samples based on approved pigment selections and coating technologies to achieve targeted performance and appearance.
- Perform accurate color matching, including making color corrections and adjustments to align samples with customer and internal standards.
- Review and interpret computer-generated readings and test data, then make appropriate formulation or process adjustments.
- Conduct a variety of tests in the R&D lab and Pilot Plant, including gloss measurements, color measurements, film build checks, particle size analysis, and spray testing of samples.
- Operate and maintain lab equipment such as gloss meters, color meters, film build gauges, and other analytical tools required for chemical evaluation.
- Set up and run mixers for plant trials, ensuring proper operation and documentation of trial parameters.
- Perform extrusion, grinding, and spraying of test samples to support product development and process optimization.
- Monitor lab runs for quality, consistency, and adherence to specifications throughout the testing process.
- Test lab samples for density, gloss under light, and color accuracy prior to release for production use.
- Verify that all products and samples meet defined specifications and quality standards before approval.
- Clean and maintain lab equipment and work areas to prevent contamination between lab runs and ensure a safe, organized environment.
- Collaborate with formulation scientists, lab technicians, and technical product specialists on projects and problem-solving activities.
- Follow established lab protocols, safety procedures, and documentation practices while contributing to continuous improvement efforts.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a closely related scientific field.
- 0–2 years of work experience in a laboratory setting.
- Hands-on experience or academic exposure to chemistry and laboratory practices.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, hands-on lab environment.
- Strong aptitude for color matching, including making color corrections and adjustments.
- Basic understanding of formulations and density testing.
- Ability to evaluate and interpret computer readings and test data to guide adjustments.
- Comfort with using lab instruments such as gloss meters, color meters, and related testing equipment.
- Ability to follow directions accurately and consistently apply standard operating procedures.
- Strong teamwork skills and willingness to collaborate on projects with a diverse technical team.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with coatings, pigments, or coatings is a plus.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining clean and safe lab space.
- Good organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple tests and samples.
- Interest in learning and growing within a high-investment, growth-focused R&D setting.
Work Environment
The role is based in a new, state-of-the-art R&D laboratory that has recently received significant investment and serves as a major growth driver for the organization.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Geneva, IL.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $24.00 - $24.00/hr.
